What if researchers could test cancer treatments on a patient’s tumor before treatment even begins?
In the latest episode of Health in Action, UND biomedical sciences Ph.D. student Aerica Nagornyuk shares the graduate student perspective on cancer research and discusses how researchers are using patient-derived organoids — miniature versions of a patient’s tumor grown in the lab — to better understand how cancers respond to treatment.
For patients and families facing a cancer diagnosis, advances like these represent more than scientific discovery. They offer hope. Hope for more personalized care, better outcomes, and a future where treatment decisions can be guided by how an individual patient's cancer responds to treatment.
As we reflect on National Cancer Survivors Day, we're reminded that every breakthrough begins with curiosity, dedication, and a commitment to improving lives. Today's research has the potential to become tomorrow's treatment.

The new Health & Horizon webcast from the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences explores important conversations shaping healthcare today and the work being done to strengthen health outcomes across our region.
The first episode of Health & Horizon will be broadcast live via Zoom at noon on Monday, June 1, and feature Shawnda Schroeder, Ph.D., assistant professor in the SMHS Department of Indigenous Health. Welcome to the Master of Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2028 💚
Last week, UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences welcomed a new class of future healthcare professionals to campus for orientation.
With 82% of the incoming class coming from North Dakota, these students reflect UND’s continued commitment to educating providers who understand and serve our communities.
As part of the program’s 53rd graduating class in 2028, they are beginning a journey that will help strengthen healthcare access across North Dakota and beyond.
One of the most encouraging parts of the week was seeing connections already forming among classmates. Study groups were coming together, conversations were happening naturally, and the atmosphere was collaborative, supportive, and full of excitement for what lies ahead.
And yes — the welcome balloons in the Peltier Atrium may have helped set the tone 😊
Welcome to UND SMHS, Class of 2028. We’re excited to see what you accomplish.

💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
In high-demand programs like those at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences, it’s common for students to feel like they should manage everything on their own.
But support is already here.
Emily Heavner, PhD, serves as an embedded psychologist, providing confidential, independent counseling for students navigating both academic and personal challenges.
With finals and end-of-year demands, this is a reminder: students do not need to be in crisis to reach out. Support is available at any stage.
