Support Your Local Police: Keep them Independent -SYLP Supporting local control of our police as essential to our freedom

For nearly 50 years The John Birch Society (JBS) has been educating Americans about the essential role that locally controlled police play in preserving our freedom. In October 2011 the JBS initiated a nationwide education project to warn state and local law enforcement officials and officers about how the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is systematically misleading them about conservative, constitutionalist, and pro-life groups. In the 1960s the JBS helped to stop the creation of Police Civilian Review Boards in many cities. These review boards would have transferred the supervision of local police from locally elected officials to locally appointed (and therefore less accountable) officials. In the 1960s and 70s the JBS warned Americans about the dangers from federal funding of (and eventual control over) local police forces. This educational campaign led to the abolition of the federal Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) in 1982. However, many forms of federal funding of local police still exist, such as the Office of Justice Programs which include Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).

LUNCH WITH THE LAW

Every month a lucky student from Badger Elementary and a friend are selected to have lunch with a police officer. Students get to eat with the officer, ask him questions, tour their squad car, and sometimes even meet K-9 Fram! Lunch with the Law is always the highlight of the officer's day!
