Here's Lincoln again. He still prefers sports to piano, but he is sticking with it. Here he patiently plays "Fiesta" from the Alfred Piano series while my little grandson (who absolutely loves Lincoln) provides lots of background distraction.

My most successful students ALL consistently have one thing in common. And it's not natural talent. Anyone want to guess what it is?

Update: people are guessing a consistent practice schedule, and they are correct in that it does have an impact. But among the most successful students, there is one thing I see 100% of the time - a thing on which the consistent practice relies to a great extent. Every single student who does well has little to no screen time, without fail. I can pretty much tell in the first month of teaching a student whether they are regular screen users or not.

This is Addy. She is about to turn ten and says people are always surprised to find out how young she is. She loves soccer and basketball and participating in Girls on the Run. She has done a 5K! She loves piano and doing recitals, even though they make her a little nervous. She also enjoys reading and is really into the Wings of Fire Collection. Her favorite book is Wonder.

Here she is playing TicTacToe from the Alfred Piano Series. This one has proved challenging for many students! When Addy first started with me, she had been with another teacher for a short time who did not teach her to read music. So Addy learned to watch and memorize. We had to go back to the beginning on reading skills and I have to say that Addy was a really good sport about that and has worked very hard to master her reading skills.

I have sometimes told students to go ahead and teach a sibling or a parent the piano. Teaching what they learn helps reinforce the concepts. It helps the students organize the information better in their minds. I guess it works if you teach your dog, too. Nice job, Emiliano! (video credits to his Mom)

This is Lucas M. He is 10 years old and here he is playing The Purple Cow. Lucas loves baseball, bicycling and reading. He likes the Magic Treehouse books. He enjoys the piano because he finds it easy to play. Someday he would like to play for the Red Sox and win the World Series. I asked him to tell me something that people would be surprised to know about him and he said that he once jumped off a ten foot wall into Rockport Harbor where there were jellyfish and he did not get bit.

I have a handful of openings for students and would love to get them filled up. Most openings at the moment are on Wednesday, but every time we shift sports seasons, so do the openings! If you've been thinking about trying to learn the piano or have a child in your life try some piano lessons, please contact me. No long term commitment. My teaching style is relaxed and fun, low pressure, and I pride myself in working with each person's individual learning style. Plus, you'll probably get to be friends with some cute little dogs. I take students age 6 through adult.

This is Anna. Anna is 12 and says she likes the feeling of making music. She describes it as “fun and beautiful”. She likes using her hands in this way.

Anna is a busy girl. In addition to piano lessons, she plays the flute in school and is in the marching band. And she takes lessons in ballet, tap dancing, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop, acro and musical theater. She is part of the competition team at her dance school.

One of her dreams is to someday perform a really big solo in dance or musical theater in front of a big audience. When she grows up, she thinks she might like to be a nurse.

This is Ethan. He is 10 years old and he really likes playing the piano. He is ambitious and often asks for more assignments during a lesson. He frequently looks ahead and tries to figure out the pieces before we even get to them in the lessons. He doesn’t like the sound of seconds played on the piano.

Ethan likes taking naps (!) He plays soccer and does karate. He would like to study robotics. He is also into 3D printing.

This is Nathan. He is 12 years old and here he is playing The Whirlwind which is a piece that tells a little story of a storm coming in, gaining strength and then dying down. Nathan likes it when the songs feel easy and he can go back and play his old favorites - something most students can understand!

In his free time, Nathan likes to read. Currently he is enjoying the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. He also likes to play soccer, learn karate and he loves to ski. He likes science best, especially when he can do experiments and blow things up. He might like to be a scientist or an actor when he grows up, but he admitted that what he thinks would be really cool is being a tornado chaser which makes The Whirlwind a perfect song for him. He says people would be surprised to know that he already has three nephews!
