This mornings class is back at it with working in no visibility and having to make a UAC connection by relying on feeling the connection to both the downed firefighter and themselves. A UAC (universal air connection) is used to supply a firefighter with air from another firefighters pack. This connection takes the fullest bottle and equalizes both air bottles so they have the same amount of air to get to a place of refuge or escape the building.

Both today’s morning and afternoon classes took a field trip to Alamance County’s 911 center to wrap up their communications portion of the class. Students got to sit with 911 dispatchers and witness how everything works from the time someone calls 911 to the dispatcher dispatching the correct units. Thank you to Alamance 911 for allowing us to come and visit!

In the fire service we have to work in limited to zero visibility. Today’s classes learned how to communicate via walkie talkies and navigate through an obstacle course with one person wearing a mask that has been blacked out and provides no visibility. This not only teaches students how to use their other instincts but also teaches students how important communication is but how to work together as a team.

This week Graham High School Fire Academy has been busy learning about the Stages of Fire, Portable extinguishers now onto Forcible entry. A Exciting week for these cadets ! Thank you to Graham Fire Department on the assistance with portable extinguishers.
