Congratulations to Rosa Cruz, the winner of our dog house giveaway! 🐾🏡 Rosa plans to give the dog house to her niece!

The dog house was built by ABSS CTE Carpentry students and donated by the Alamance-Caswell Builders Association for the giveaway at recent community events. Thank you to the Alamance-Caswell Builders Association for supporting our students and helping showcase their carpentry skills!

Southern Alamance High School CTE students have had the opportunity to learn from a great lineup of guest speakers over the past couple of weeks! 👏

🧬Health Science 1 students with Ms. Barnes are building 3D models of the skin using a tissue box, paper, cereal, and yarn!

Students will show the three main layers of the skin—the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (subcutaneous layer)—and label key structures such as hair follicles, sweat glands, nerves, blood vessels, and fat cells, along with a brief explanation of each structure’s function.

This hands-on project helps students visualize how the layers of the skin are stacked and connected, and how each one works to protect the body, regulate temperature, sense the environment, and store energy.

Ms. Barnes from CTEC was recognized at last week’s ABSS Board Meeting as a finalist for the NCCAT 2027 Burroughs Wellcome Fund NC CTE Teacher of the Year Award!

We were honored to have Dr. M. Brock Womble, NCCAT Executive Director, recognize Adara Barnes alongside Dr. Nancy Cross from NC DPI.

The winner will be announced at the NCCAT Awards Banquet on October 29th. We’re excited to celebrate Ms. Barnes and all she brings to CTE! 👏

Mission: Student Success is in full effect! 🌟 Today our educators spent the day sharpening their skills, collaborating, and planning. Every session. Every room. Every conversation. All for our students. These are just a few examples of the incredible work taking place!

At the ABSS Career & Technical Education Center, CTE teachers and business advisory members gathered for the Annual CTE Business Advisory Meeting. 🤝 Together, they had meaningful conversations across all six career clusters — Building & Moving, Caring for Communities, Connecting & Supporting Success, Creating & Experiencing, Cultivating Resources, and Investing in the Future. Community partners were also invited to join the discussion to share how the skills students are learning in these courses can be beneficial.

Over at Hawfields Middle School, elementary and secondary teachers dove into 30+ professional development sessions covering math, reading and writing, science, world languages, the arts, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. 📚✏️ Every conversation was focused on one thing — helping our students thrive.

Our Pre-K teachers also made the most of today by completing CPR and First Aid recertification training. 🚑 This hands-on training reinforced essential life-saving skills — from recognizing and responding to cardiac and breathing emergencies to administering CPR and basic first aid care. Keeping our youngest learners safe is always the top priority!

This is what it looks like when adults model lifelong learning for our students. We look forward to seeing our students tomorrow to finish the week strong! 💪

| 🦴 No bones about it: Adara Barnes, Health Science teacher at ABSS Career & Technical Education Center, is the ABSS CTE Teacher of the Year! 🏆✨

Ms. Barnes is an amazing instructor who expertly guides her students who are interested in nursing or health care to course completion and certification! Students in Health Science are able to earn their credential in First Aid given by the American Heart Association, good for two years and usable in a hospital or nursing facility. ❤️ These students can enter into Nursing Fundamentals their senior year, where they visit clinical sites to learn more about patient care. They can also earn their CPR certification at CTEC!

There were opportunities aplenty at the ABSS CTE Senior Job Fair! Over 120 ABSS Seniors came by the Mebane Arts Center to speak to representatives from over 30 local businesses and organizations. Many brought resumes and applied for positions on the spot! Students were also able to speak with military recruiters, learn more about ACC's programs, and hear from community organizations such as United Way, NCWorks, and Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities. Thanks to all local participants who were a part of this event and to our staff for your organization and leadership.

What an incredible turnout at the FFA West Central Regional Leadership Conference! On Friday, October 2nd, Southern Alamance High School hosted 342 middle and high school FFA members from across Alamance, Guilford, Orange, Chatham, Davidson, Montgomery, and Randolph counties.

Regional Leadership Conferences are all about helping students build confidence, hone leadership skills, make strong connections, and get deeper into FFA.

Throughout the day, members jumped into hands-on workshops led by regional and state FFA officers, local extension agents, Farm Bureau members, FFA alumni, and ag colleges from across North Carolina. The sessions focused on essential skills like Communication & Teamwork, Personal Growth & Goal Setting, and Planning for Life After High School.

A huge shoutout to Southern Alamance FFA President Kendall Donley, who also serves as the Regional President, for her leadership in bringing everyone together!

These future leaders are heading back to their home chapters loaded with fresh ideas, inspiration, and lifelong memories. The future of agriculture is looking bright! 🌾✨

Throughout the month, we’ve highlighted Agriculture courses across ABSS CTE and shared a closer look at the hands-on learning happening in classrooms, labs, greenhouses, and beyond.

From growing and caring for plants and animals to working with equipment, exploring natural resources, and developing real-world skills, ABSS Agriculture gives students opportunities to learn by doing. 🚜
