Student Spotlight: Zoey Williams

Meet Zoey Williams, a student in our HEA adult pathways who is working toward earning her High School Equivalency (HSE).

•What made you decide not to give up and continue working toward your goals?

“I want to become a doctor. I got my CNA in school, and I wanted to prove to myself that there are things out there for me. I wanted to show my family and friends that no matter what life gives you, you make it the life you want and deserve.”

•What has it been like working with Justin, your instructor?

“Working with Justin has helped me so much. He is so funny and has a great spirit. He encourages me to keep pushing and motivates me to keep working on math. He also gets me all the resources I need.”

•What are you hoping to do once you earn your HSE?

“I’m hoping to go to Goshen College and start my career in healthcare.”

•What would you say to another adult who has failed a test or feels like giving up?

“Keep going. You’ll get where you need to be, and God will get you through all your challenges. Keep going. Keep pushing.”

•What does earning your HSE mean to you personally?

“It means a whole lot. It means I can conquer anything and be who I want to be. Nothing is stopping me.”

This year, Horizon Adult Pathways has served more than 212 adults working toward their high school equivalency (HSE), an industry certification, or English language skills. And the stats show these learners are dedicated: 89% of adults enrolled in an HEA program achieve one or more educational gains, and 95% of those in a certification program go on to earn an industry-recognized credential.

That track record hasn't gone unnoticed: Adult Pathways has been named an Indiana Department of Education Program of Excellence two years running.

It's part of a bigger picture, too: Indiana ranked #1 in the nation for adult learners making measurable skill gains, with two out of three students statewide gaining two or more grade levels in reading, math, or English. Elkhart County is doing its part to make that happen.

This week is National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, and it's a good time to talk about something a lot of people don't realize: nearly 1 in 3 U.S. adults struggles with basic literacy skills, and an estimated 59 million adults read at or below the lowest proficiency level.

Every year, roughly 25,000 Hoosiers go back to the classroom to earn a diploma, build English language skills, or gain the credentials they need for a better job. That's more students than attend Ball State University.

At Horizon Education Alliance, we see what's possible when adults in our community get a second shot at education; for themselves, and for their kids watching at home. All week, we're sharing what adult education and family literacy mean for Elkhart County. Follow along. 📚

You are given a list of questions you can ask students, so all you have to do is show up and talk to students to help them develop their interview skills. Did you know? Elkhart County was chosen to pioneer a statewide Career Coaching pilot and Horizon Career Navigation now places a dedicated coach in every public high school in the county.

In the 2025-26 school year alone, those coaches helped high schoolers complete 27,504 career-readiness activities — from job interview prep to FAFSA help to connecting graduation plans to real career goals. And it starts even earlier: through Career Quest and Manufacturing Day, HEA partners with 40+ local employers to give every 7th- and 8th-grader in the county a hands-on look at local career paths.

That's what it looks like when schools, businesses, and community work together to open doors for students. 🎯
