What are schools seeing after implementing phone-free school policies?

Research continues to highlight the impact personal devices can have on student focus, engagement, and well-being. Schools across the country that have implemented phone-free practices have also reported positive results, including increased student engagement, improved academic performance, and fewer behavioral referrals.

As Goshen Community Schools prepares to implement Yondr pouches for students in grades 7-12 this fall, we remain focused on creating learning environments where students can engage with their teachers, connect with their peers, and focus on learning.

We've made important updates to our student device policy for the 2026-27 school year.

Grades 7-12 (Yondr Program)
• Goshen Community Schools will now provide a Yondr pouch at no cost to every student in grades 7-12.
• Students will receive their pouch on the first day of school and return it to the school on the last day of the school year.
• Replacement pouches will cost $35 if one is lost or damaged beyond normal wear.

Grades K-6
While students in grades K-6 will not use Yondr pouches, Indiana Senate Bill 78 still requires wireless communication devices to be inaccessible during the school day. As outlined in the student handbook, students in grades K-4, upon arrival, will:
1. Turn their phone/WCD off or switch it to airplane mode.
2. Turn their phone/WCD into the office to be stored during the day.
3. Pick up their device at the end of the day.

Students in 5th and 6th Grade will:
1. Turn their phone/WCD off or switch it to airplane mode.
2. Phone/WCD will be placed in the student’s locker and will remain there during the school day.
3. Retrieve their device from the locker at the end of the day.

Our goal is the same for every school: creating focused learning environments where students can fully engage with their teachers and classmates.

Hemos realizado importantes actualizaciones en nuestra política de dispositivos para estudiantes para el año escolar 2026-27.

Grados 7-12 (Programa Yondr)
• Las Escuelas Comunitarias de Goshen ahora proporcionarán una bolsa Yondr sin costo alguno a todos los estudiantes de los grados 7 a 12.
• Los alumnos recibirán su bolsa el primer día de clases y la devolverán a la escuela el último día del año escolar.
• Las fundas de repuesto costarán 35 dólares si se pierden o se dañan más allá del desgaste normal.

Grados K-6
Si bien los estudiantes de los grados K-6 no usarán las bolsas Yondr, el Proyecto de Ley 78 del Senado de Indiana aún exige que los dispositivos de comunicación inalámbrica sean inaccesibles durante la jornada escolar. Como se describe en el manual del estudiante, los estudiantes de los grados K-4, al llegar, deberán:
