MAJOR TRIVIA QUESTION… ???

Who out there can provide us any information, photographs, whereabouts, or other pertinent data regarding the unknown history of what was known as “Sand Ridge High School”?

GHS alum, Laura Cates Duncan, with the Jackson County Historical Society, is attempting to gather any information on the former school, and whether it had an organized sports team of any kind. She’d received a sportsman’s jersey letter from Herrin City Library History Room, which is assumed to be from a former student of the school. We’re further interested in learning what the school may have looked like, and where it was located in or near the tiny village of Sand Ridge. We’ve always known there was a grade school in Sand Ridge. However, most of us have always assumed that any high school student residing in Sand Ridge would have always attended Gorham High School. Who knew?!?
Please forward any information you may have directly to Laura Cates Duncan, or one of the Admins of the MVSD #166 page. THANKS!

Mark J Mifflin, Sandy Shepard Gilliland Leonard, MJ Holt, LeaLea Skinner …. Can any of you help us out with information or photos you may have available?? Thank you!

Laura Cates Duncan, through her work with the Jackson County Historical Society, was so kind to send me a variety of early 20th Century articles from the Daily Independent newspaper, about Gorham and the High/Grade School. I will be publishing them to the “Mississippi Valley School District #166” page as a series, throughout the coming weeks, with this one being the first. I hope you enjoy reading them!

If you take a moment to review the past year’s posts, here on the “Mississippi Valley School District #166” page, you’ll quickly feel a sense of solemn sadness. The majority of news we provide seems to consist of obituaries, announcing the deaths of our former students, faculty, and support staff who attended or worked at Gorham High School. While it’s important that we strive to keep our alumni informed of the passing of those affiliated with the school, our page was designed to provide much more… giving YOU the opportunity to share items of interest,
such as:
✅ Interesting news-worthy articles
✅ Nostalgic photos
✅ Memories of your days at GHS
✅ Pertinent announcements

We encourage you to submit such items to either of our Page Administrators for review and publishing:
Robert Frischkorn at [email protected]
or Dale Kranawetter at [email protected]

Thank you for your support and continued interest in “Mississippi Valley School District #166”, and for helping to keep our school’s page alive and exciting!

The 1952 Gorham Mustangs made a trip to Peoria for the State baseball tournament!

Ace pitcher Lewis Glidewell struck out 16, while heavy hitting Tom Morgan drove in the winning run!
The team was coached by Benny Dunn and also featured sophomore and future Major Leaguer, Gary Merle Geiger!
