[10/27/20]   I've come to realize jewels of the lodge are not only the level, plumb, and square, but they are our well informed elder brothers who have invested many nights in our meetings. I feel they are taken for granted much to often. Their work and investment to the generations is a testament to the love of the fraternity, and unselfish zeal to the legacy they shall leave behind. These brothers are often quick to correct errors made by the lesser informed. Why? Cause they care. They care so much that many nights were spent chipping away at their corner stone to leave as a perfect ashlar, one that will be uniform and true. And teaching others how to use our tools to do the same. These brothers are to be cherished, cause these brothers are also jewels of our Lodge.

Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren:

Greetings to you:

Once more it is time to think about the election and installation of Officers of your lodge. This has been an unusual year to say the least. Nothing has been like we thought it would be this time last year planning for elections and installations of officers was a simple and straight forward part of the business of the lodge.

Useless to say this is not normal year for any of us. The Covid Virus has turned our year into anything but a normal year. And most of all, think about how we will handle this routine task.

Worshipful Master, I realize that you and your officers have had very little time to get full enjoyment out of your year. With that in mind, we are planning for this task.

One option would be that the current slate of officers could remain in place for another year. No installation would be necessary and would address the problem of installation of officers.

Another option would be to have a closed installation without having family and friends in attendance.

Another option would be to have a public installation. I realize that you and your officers would like to have friends and family to be there to see the installation. This is an impressive ceremony, and it gives your family and friends a chance to get a glimpse of what we are about. The problem comes in with local restrictions imposed by the civil authority.

Worshipful Master, the burden of enforcing these restrictions fall on your shoulders.

These restrictions may include, but are not limited to:

Social Distancing
The number of people in a given space.
The wearing of mask.
Checking individual temperatures.
Hand Sanitizing made available.
And any other restrictions that may be imposed in your local area. These safety precautions not only apply to members, but guests as well.

It would please me if everything could be normal, but they aren’t. We have been given lemons, so let’s make lemonade. This letter must be read at the next stated meeting.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Robert T. Reed

The Most Worshipful Grand Master

General information

The New Middleton Masonic Lodge is the oldest historical landmark left standing in the New Middleton community. The present Lodge Hall building has stood for over sixty years on what used to be part of the New Middleton School campus. A little to the right of the steps was the home plate used by the boys' baseball team. The New Middleton Masonic Lodge #249 was chartered October 10, 1856 Nathan Ward Worshipful Master, Elijah A. Wright, Senior Warden, John A. Moore's Junior Warden. The first Masonic Lodge Hall was on the second floor of the New Middleton Academy which was built sometime between 1856 and 1859. It is believed that members did not meet on a regular basis during the years between 1862-1865 while the War Between the States was going on. The New Middleton Academy which housed the Lodge Hall was engulfed in flames on September 8, 1919. The school was immediately built back with the Lodge Hall again occupying the second floor. The explosion of a kerosene lamp on the second floor in 1924 caused the building to become a pile of ashes. After this disaster, a school building was erected on the hill, and the present Masonic Lodge Hall was built. Excerpt taken from: Smith County History Article written by Katheryn Frye Dickens
