INSPIRING ARTIST:

Henri Regnault wowed the art world with this painting owing to it's unusual color scheme. The science of oil painting came to it's full fruition in the nineteenth century. The palette now included dazzling colors which could electrify a painting.
First a student of Cabanel's and later influenced by Mariano Fortuny y Marshal, Regnault was one of the rising stars of the Romantic movement. He lived a passionate life, traveling to the Middle East even though he was broke, hanging out in Spain as it rose up against Queen Isabella the Second, he loved excitement and adventure.

Henri Regnault predicted that he would not live long. Less than a year after this painting was completed his prediction came true; while fighting in the Franco-Prussion war, even though he was exempt from military service because of his artist status, he died in the battle of Buzenfal at the age of twenty eight.

This was a fun, personal project to exercise making an object look natural in a foreign environment using photoshop.

I wanted to experiment on how to make a low-res image look just as realistic and sharp as a high-res, since that's what most clients give me to work with anyways. Also, I always set a reasonable time limit to force myself to work at a quicker pace and not to get carried away.

The polaroid image is completely mine, but the journal background behind the polaroid is someone else's (I couldn't find out who).

Drawing hands is one of the quickest ways to train your eye to correctly identify shapes, shadows, and lighting. Although its always better to draw from life when you can, practicing with non-flash photos of hands can be a great help in understanding foreshortening and the anatomy of other parts of the human body that may seem more complicated. Even if you aren't interested in painting people it will help you see the value, shape, and form better in landscapes and animals as well.
