USDA Begins Accepting Applications for the Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety Block Grant Program; Will Accept Applications for the Pandemic Response and Safety Grant Program in October

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announced the publication of a Request for Applications (RFA) for the Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety (SPRS) Block Grant Program on Sept. 23. The SPRS grant program will provide approximately $50 million in assistance to seafood processing facilities and processing vessels through block grants to State agencies. USDA allocated funding to certain U.S. states and territories based on a formula that considers economic activity as demonstrated through commercial fisheries landings, as detailed in the RFA. This program is funded by the Pandemic Assistance provided in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.

The application period for the Pandemic Response and Safety (PRS) Grant Program will open in early October. This is a shift from the originally scheduled opening date. Once open, applicants will still have 45 days to apply. The PRS grant program will provide assistance to small businesses in certain commodity areas, including specialty crop producers, shellfish farming, finfish farming, aquaculture and apiculture; specialty crop, meat, and other processors; distributors; and farmers markets. Approximately $650 million in funding is available for the PRS grants, which are funded by the Pandemic Assistance provided in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.

The CALS family is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Carl Hunt, professor emeritus in the Department of Animal, Veterinary and Food Sciences. Our thoughts are with Carl’s family and friends.

Carl joined the U of I family in 1985 and quickly became a favorite professor and mentor among students. He established the Student Idaho Cattle Association chapter at U of I and oversaw the Steer-a-Year program for decades, including after retirement, among many other accomplishments. He was a wonderful advocate for agriculture and beef cattle and will be missed.

A celebration of life will be held on Sat., Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Moscow. A reception will follow at the Palouse Ice Rink at 5 p.m. More information is available at http://evite.me/efFaquG7Vu.
