Check out the beautiful new mural in our ISDB cafeteria! Quoc Khanh Dang is an incredibly talented Deaf artist who graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian and is currently attending CWI as an art major. He worked as a mentor for our Work Readiness Program this summer and painted the mural as part of his paid work experience, and we're so grateful that he shared his talents with our community. Great things are happening at ISDB!

Shawn Cheshire - A Blind Odyssey | Cross-country Cycling Adventure | Choosing to See

The last week of school was a busy one at ISDB! Shawn Cheshire, a world renowned blind athlete, and Steve Martin, an Army Veteran and bilateral below-knee amputee made a stop at our school. They are bicycling from coast to coast across the United States.
Their mission is to build public awareness and create connections between the sighted and visually impaired communities by providing assistance, opportunities and encouragement to the blind while inspiring and educating the sighted. This was a life changing visit that our staff and students will never forget. Follow their journey at http://www.shawncheshire.org/

It's Teacher Appreciation Week here at Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind. This year, as everyone knows, has been unprecedented for education. Covid-19 roared into our community and our staff didn't back down-everyone rushed into the breach, masks on, and courageously gave our students the best education that they could.
We are able to do what we do because of the tireless, selfless efforts of everyone in our agency. So in addition to our incomparable teachers, we want to express our boundless gratitude to our paraprofessionals, Speech Therapists, OT, PT, School Counselor, Audiology, ASL Interpreters, Spanish Interpreters, Custodians, Outreach, APH/Blind Services, Maintenance, Nutrition Services, Bus Drivers, Grounds Crew, Nurses, Human Resources, Business and Accounting, Orientation and Mobility, Independent Living, Cottage Life, Coaches, IT and AT Department, Administrative Staff, Administration, and everyone who has gone above and beyond to make our school a safe, healthy, inclusive and accessible place to learn and grow for our amazing students.
Thank you to everyone for all you've done. Much of it has been behind the scenes, but it hasn't gone unnoticed. We are who we are because of you.
Thank you.

Our Blind/Visually Impaired students participated Learning Ally's The Great Reading Games 2021. They've been voraciously reading since the beginning of January to prepare for this epic event, culminating in activities all day Tuesday. They started the day with donuts and a read-a-thon, then enjoyed a webinar with actor and narrator Grant Patrizio, a reading scavenger hunt in the library, then on to crafting bookmarks and reading games. They wrapped up the day by making treats from their favorite books for all to enjoy. Congratulations to our ISDB students-we were ranked 16th IN THE NATION for pages read! A HUGE thank you to all the teachers and paraprofessionals who did everything needed to make this day a roaring success. Go Raptors! #grg21 Learning Ally

Good morning to our ISDB Friends and Family. We have a great opportunity for people who would like to work with our amazing students as a substitute. Signing ability is very helpful, but if you don't know ASL, you can still work in both our B/VI and some of our Special Needs Departments. If you are proficient in sign language, there is a high need for your skills! If you or anyone you know is dependable, enjoys working with our kids, and would like to be considered for our substitute list, please contact Shelley Comstock at 208-934-4457.

Higher Ground
The ISDB Adventure Club is having a fundraiser and selling these hand-made decoration pieces for $25 each. They measure about 20 inches tall, are made of wood, the paint is a navy blue. They are all ready to go now and we can arrange shipping if the cost is covered or delivery to most of Magic Valley, all of Wood River Valley, and we can arrange a pick-up for Treasure Valley.

All proceeds go to the ISDB Adventure Club and help us continue this programming. ISDB Adventure Club is not funded by the school and we fundraise all our money, so we greatly appreciate all the help we can get. Donations are always welcome at any time too :)

ISDB Adventure Club is for elementary aged students from all over the state, who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and attend the Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind. We coordinate with Higher Ground Sun Valley and other organizations to provide new experiences for these students in a language rich environment. We have three 4-day trips per year, two in the winter and one in the summer. Providing a language rich environment is Adventure's Club main focus because often that is not something these students always have access to outside of their school environment. Students involved in Adventure Club learn that with persistence they can do hard things and begin to build life-long skills and develop interests to live happy, full, and healthy lives.

Please let Jodie Hamilton know if you would like to purchase one. Checks can be made out to "ISDB Adventure Club" or we can take cash or possibly venmo.
