There is a good deal of misinformation being spread that is dividing our community.

As has been stated before, we welcome discourse with our stakeholders -- parents, students, and other valued members. As teachers, we work with students every single day. We have been open to questions, and we value transparency. We have reached out and kept communication lines open.

To those who have given us feedback and have worked with us to make the Gonzales Unified School District the best that it can be -- we thank you and appreciate your efforts.

What we do not condone are baseless attacks, mistruths, and the harassment of our staff. During this pandemic time, our teachers have worked diligently to provide quality education with the tools they were given. We continue to fight the good fight, most of it behind closed doors.

Despite the numerous circumstances out of our control, we have remained professional, sought solutions, and have taken a lot of the blame and responsibility. We continue approaching each day as an opportunity to move forward.

We would like to point out that the salary schedule for the Gonzales Unified School District is posted on the website. It has never been a secret, and we are providing a link to it.

I want to thank our teachers who have been working above and beyond to teach the students of our community whether they are in town, another state, and other countries. We are international educators doing the best we can, transforming our craft digitally, 11 months into a pandemic the world has not seen in over 100 years.

The comments made by our superintendent to KION on the broadcast of February 2, 2021, were not reflective of The Gonzales Way… to love, care, and connect. The comments were divisive and deferred all accountability on the educators. The amount of D’s and F’s are not a failure of the teacher to realize the cumulative effects of the grades EARNED, but more a failure to recognize the value of collaboration and input on the distance learning schedule. The distance learning experience is not unique to GUSD. Every private, charter, and public-school classroom is doing their best to survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trauma has been experienced by all members of the educational community. The continued criticism of our educators has only exacerbated the situation, especially a day after a socio-emotional sitewide in-service. The person who could have supported us the most in the public eye took the opportunity to scrutinize us in the public eye. We are all in agreement that the amount of D’s and F’s are alarming, although a concerted effort to cooperatively resolve this situation could have proved more fruitful. In the future, we hope to work together to achieve better results.

In solidarity,
Fidencio Cuevas
GTA President

Updates from our GTA President:

1. The unfair labor practice charge vs. GUSD: The Public Employees Relations Board is currently dealing with office closures. Things have been delayed as a result. The ULP charge does not have an update at this time.

2. Arbitration: Regarding the grievance we filed early last fall about the sixth period we were unexpectedly given. We have mutually selected an arbitrator from the State Mediation and Conciliation Service. We are working on finding a date that works for both the district and our union negotiations team.

3. Impasse hearing regarding the schedule for second semester: After two impasse hearings on December 14th and January 11th, no resolution was reached, and we are now awaiting the official report from the state-assigned mediator.
