More than 5,000 years ago the Maya created a numerical system "in base 20", which coincides with the 20 days of the month, according to the Haab calendar.

Having a mathematical system allowed them to make calculations and predict the movements of the stars. Their detailed observation led them to measure time, even calculating the arrival of eclipses.

"El Mundo Maya" includes proposals to learn to use this ancient number system, and calculate, among others, how to write our age or the year we were born.

Hace más de 5,000 años los Maya crearon un sistema numérico “en base 20”, que coincide con los 20 días con los que contaban los meses, según el calendario Haab.

Disponer de un sistema matemático les permitió hacer cálculos y prever los movimientos de los astros. Su observación detallada les llevó a medir el tiempo, calculando incluso la llegada de eclipses.

“El Mundo Maya” incluye propuestas para aprender a utilizar este antiguo sistema numérico, y calcular, entre otros, como escribir nuestra edad o el año en el que nacimos.

- An activity booklet with a map of the territory, an introduction to the culture, book and music recommendations, food, traditional games, and much more!

- Two handwork projects that bring to life aspects of that culture, through a variety of mediums such as hand sewing, wet felting, or kite paper crafting.

- Two art painting projects which relate to that culture through legends, stories, or characters.

- Two traditional cooking recipes and their history.

- Self-made dictionary of words and sentences

The National Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of the culture and origin of Latinos and Hispanic Americans in the United States. The month-long event begins from September 15 until October 15.

Expert mathematicians, architects, astronomers, artists, and one of the very few societies that even created a complete writing system, the Maya peoples developed one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas.

Hi! My name is Marta, and I am the person behind Celebrate Cultures. I was born in Barcelona, and moved to California about 7 years ago, together with my husband and our two children, who were then 6 and 3 years old.

Growing up, my favorite subject at school was Foreign Language. I loved learning new words and expressions, and mostly, I loved being able to communicate with people from other cultures and places. For years, I was also able to travel quite often, and even live in different continents.

Time after, while raising my own children, I felt this need to expose them to the wonderful diversity of this world that I had had a chance to explore. I studied Waldorf pedagogy and realized how powerful art and storytelling were in the learning process. I started then developing projects that became fun, bonding memories for my whole family and that helped instill an appreciation for diversity.

Celebrate Cultures is a natural evolution of these “home-made” projects that included different kinds of Arts, Stories, and exposure to other cultures, particularly to the heritage of Spanish-speaking cultures..

¡Hola! Me llamo Marta y soy la persona que está detrás de Celebrate Cultures. Nací en Barcelona y me mudé a California hace unos 7 años, junto con mi marido y nuestros dos hijos, que entonces tenían 6 y 3 años.

Al crecer, mi materia favorita en la escuela era Lengua Extranjera. Me encantaba aprender nuevas palabras y expresiones y, sobre todo, me encantaba poder comunicarme con personas de otras culturas y lugares. Durante años, también pude viajar con bastante frecuencia e incluso vivir en diferentes continentes.

Mientras criaba a mis hijos, sentí la necesidad de exponerlos a la maravillosa diversidad de este mundo que yo había tenido la oportunidad de explorar. Estudié pedagogía Waldorf y me dí cuenta de lo poderosos que eran el arte y las historias en el proceso de aprendizaje. Empecé a desarrollar proyectos que se convirtieron en valiosos recuerdos para toda mi familia, y que ayudaron a inculcar el aprecio por la diversidad y por otras culturas.

Celebrate Cultures es una evolución natural de estos proyectos “caseros” que incluyen diferentes tipos de artes, leyendas y un acercamiento a otras culturas, y en particular a la herencia de los países de habla hispana..
