Dr. Linville's 6th-grade science students have been exploring changes in matter, putting their knowledge to the test with a hands-on chemistry lab!

Using milk, vinegar, and baking soda, students investigated chemical changes and different types of mixtures through a multistep experiment. Along the way, they put their recently acquired laboratory skills into practice, using graduated cylinders and beakers to carefully measure and combine materials.

The final result? They made their very own glue! Students were able to observe a chemical change and explore the characteristics of a homogeneous mixture—all while gaining valuable experience with scientific procedures and laboratory equipment.

What a great way to bring chemistry concepts to life through experimentation, observation, and discovery!

Our 4th graders had a WILD day at the Asheboro Zoo! Students got to see a variety of animals up close and learn firsthand about their habitats, connecting perfectly with what we are currently learning in science! Learning is always more fun when we can experience it in real life! What a wonderful day of learning, exploring, and making memories!

So many fun things are happening! Mrs. Daughtry and Mrs. Bass teamed up and took their kindergarten classes on an exciting adventure to explore the Five Senses! What better way to learn about our senses than to put them to work?

HEARING: We became sound detectives! The children listened carefully and tried to identify familiar household sounds like running water, a flushing toilet, a vacuum cleaner, and even a glass plate breaking! We also put our listening skills to the test with animal sounds.

SIGHT: We headed outside for a Nature Hunt using our brand-new, fancy “sight cameras”! The children used their eyes to observe and discover the world around them.

SMELL: Our little scientists became Smell Detectives! We tested our noses with disguised but familiar scents and made our best guesses. They correctly identified 6 out of 7 scents—WOW! Talk about impressive sniffing!

TOUCH & TASTE: Since we had a four-day week, we combined our last two senses with a delicious culminating experiment—MICROWAVE POPCORN! 🍿

We used ALL FIVE senses as we watched and listened to the microwave, heard the popcorn popping, observed the bag changing, smelled the delicious popcorn, watched the steam, felt the warmth, explored the popcorn and kernels, noticed the buttery texture…and finally, the BEST part—TASTE!

What a fun, hands-on way to wrap up our learning about the Five Senses! Our kindergarten scientists learned, explored, observed, predicted, and had SO much fun along the way!

Taking Environmental Science Beyond the Classroom!

Dr. Sharp's AP Biology and AP Environmental Science students recently traveled to the Sound to Sea Environmental Education Program at Trinity Center in Pine Knoll Shores for an immersive, hands-on study of coastal ecology.

Building on classroom lessons about food chains, food webs, energy transfer, and ecosystem productivity, students explored the vital role of seagrass beds as nursery habitats for marine organisms.

Working collaboratively, students waded into the sound with a large seine net to collect samples of fish, shrimp, and other aquatic organisms. They then identified and cataloged their findings and used the collected data to calculate biodiversity, gaining valuable experience with ecological sampling and field research techniques.

Despite the chilly temperatures and choppy waters brought on by a Nor'easter, our Chargers embraced the opportunity to experience science firsthand!

An outstanding example of experiential learning—connecting classroom concepts to real-world scientific investigation!

What a way to wrap up our PSA Fundraiser!
Our Apex REMIX & Color Games were a HUGE success! From our littlest Little Chargers all the way to the Senior Class, students had an absolute blast celebrating, competing, and showing their Charger spirit!
And the best part? Together, our WCDS community raised over $50,000!

A HUGE thank you to our students, families, friends, and supporters who helped make this fundraiser such an incredible success. Way to go, Chargers!

Bigs + Littles = BIG fun at WCDS!
One of our favorite WCDS traditions is officially underway! Our seniors and kindergarteners met their Big/Little partners for the first time this year and kicked things off by getting to know one another. The Bigs interviewed their Littles and learned all about their favorite things, interests, and personalities!
Throughout the year, these special buddies will come together for fun monthly activities, creating friendships and memories that span from Kindergarten to senior year! We can’t wait to watch these sweet friendships grow!

WCDS seniors had a blast putting their creativity on display as they painted their very own parking spots! From colorful designs to personal touches, each space is as unique as the senior who created it. We love seeing our Class of 2027 make their mark on campus and enjoy this special senior tradition!
