Graduation Spotlight: Timothy Hyde
Tim is an apprentice with Smithfield Foods at the Clinton facility. He joined Apprenticeship Wayne in September 2019. Tim will graduate this spring as a double major earning an Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Systems Technology and an Associate of Applied Science in Mechatronics (Mechatronics Engineering Technology - Wayne Community College). He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society - Wayne Community College and will be transferring to the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (ECU's BSIT Transfer Program) in the fall.

Here is what Tim had to share when asked, "What does this apprenticeship program mean to you?"

"This apprenticeship gave me an opportunity to finish a college degree that I didn’t think I was going to get after dropping out of college and starting a family at 20. When I was offered the opportunity, I knew I could not pass up the chance to finish my two-year degree, gain experience, and earn a journeyman’s certificate. When I found out that I could also graduate with a second degree in Mechatronics with just a few more classes, I jumped at the opportunity. I will be starting ECU in the fall to pursue my Industrial Engineering Technology degree because of this opportunity. I am so thankful to have had this opportunity to get this experience."

Congratulations, Tim, on achieving this milestone! We are excited to see you continue your journey as a pirate, but you will forever be a BISON! 💙🦬💛

The Engineering & Manufacturing Student Showcase focused on showcasing the new Graduates of the Spring 2023 semester to our Industrial Partners and Advisory board. All 7 Programs were represented. This will help Wayne Community College to continue to improve how we prepare students to enter the high-skilled workforce. Students had their Design Projects and Capstones on display. We also had demos of training equipment. The students were prepared to answer questions and discuss any employment opportunities.

Students had to build 3 different Work-cells. Handling, Stacking, and Conveyor. They were able then to combine all 3 into one Work-cells. This creates a mini industrial line to learn with hands on labs. The Graduates are working hard on finishing out their Degrees!

Graduate Spotlight: Dwight Kearney is a Graduate of the Mechatronics Program 2022 and Future WCC Instructor

"Upon the closing of Cooper Standard, I was thinking of a career in teaching, so I entered the mechatronics program at WCC. Its primary focus is industrial automation, which was my career field for the past 40 years. I decided to enroll to update my education in hopes of pursuing an adjunct instructor position at the college. I've really enjoyed my experience at Wayne Community College and look forward to the possibility of working here down the road."

This is a great opportunity for our recent high school graduates. Even if they are planning for a BS degree, why not get the first two years for free?
On the other hand...there are local industries STARTING maintenance techs at $50k with their Associate Degree.
Thanks,
