Terra Nullius and the Violence of Erasure

An excerpt from

Terra Nullius is a legal fiction that means "nobody's land."

Colonial powers used it to justify claiming territory that was already home to Indigenous peoples with complex political, cultural, and spiritual systems. By declaring land empty, colonizers erased people first, then possession followed.
