Happy Friday, GPS Families!

We had a fun, busy, warm week of October learning!

PTO hosted another AMAZING Mad Science Night! We had experiments, scientific procedures, reactions, and OMSI! Thank you to our AMAZING PTO for bringing science to us!🧪 🧫 🎇

Look in your child’s backpack for the blue conference scheduling form! Return and RSVP ASAP so we can finalize our conference schedules! We are excited to share your child’s goals and progress with you! 📈

Next week, GPS will participate in The Great Shake Out on October 15. Drop, cover and hold in an earthquake! 🌍

Things I learned from my students this week:
1. An inference is using text or picture clues and your background knowledge (schema) to figure out what is happening.
2. Graphic novels tell a story through pictures, captions, and dialogue bubbles like a comic book.
3. A prefix is added to the beginning of a root word to mean “before”, like pretest means “before” the test.
4. Fluency is not just how fast you read. It is using punctuation and voice so that you understand what you are reading and people like to listen and get sucked into what you are reading!
5. Observation means you watch something and record what is happening.
6. Science observations are awesome!
7. A hypothesis is using what you know to make a smart guess.
8. Baking soda and vinegar make a small explosion!
9. Multiplication can be mental math by using a bar model. 65x6: 60x6=360 and 5x6=30. 360+30=390
10. A science procedure is the order of steps that you follow to conduct an experiment.
11. Oil and water can swirl together, but will separate if left to sit still. Oil sits on top of the water.
12. Oranges have a built in life jacket with air bubbles in the peel that causes them to float. Without the peel, the fruit sinks!
13. Sliming teachers is worth the money! 💰

Happy Sunday, GPS Families!

Whew! What a busy week! Can you believe this fall weather? 80 degrees?!?🤩

We had a fun Homecoming Spirit week with Color Wars, Sports Day and Purple and Gold day. We watched the Noise Parade. We loved clapping and waving at our GHS Timberwolves! 💜💛💜

Picture Day was a success! You should receive information from Jostens in about two weeks! 📸

Next week is another busy week, full of fun,learning and sharing! PTO will have a PTO meeting on Tuesday, October 6 at 5:30 in the GPS Library and MAD Science Night on Thursday from 5-6:30! Come join the fun and slime a teacher or maybe even Mrs. Hedges! 🪣

Blue Conference scheduling forms will come home on Friday, October 9th! Look for them, mark your calendar, and return your form ASAP! 🖊️

Things I learned from my students last week:
1. Fluency doesn’t just mean speed. It means accurate and efficient and flexible too.
2. Efficient means the right strategy for the right problem at the right time.
3. Principal: “Who did you think was loudest in the noise parade?”Kindergarten friend: “The Timberwolves!” 💜💛
4. Characters and setting are important parts of the story.
5. Sequence is the order in which things happen in a story.
6. Kangaroos have pouches for their babies to hide from scary things.
7. There are lots of exciting ways to say “said”, like whispered, belted, snarled, yelled and exclaimed!
8. Birthdays are fun at school with friends and teachers and cupcakes!
9. Putting numbers in order from least to greatest means looking at the place values.
10. Timberwolves are the best and they love purple and gold! “Those guys with the instruments did pretty good making noise!” 💜💛

Good Morning, GPS Families!

Happy Monday!

We had a busy week last week and a busy weekend! 🐾

Fourth Grade went to Spring Creek Fish Hatchery to explore the life cycle of salmon "hands on". 🐟

We worked on line in art with Mrs. O’Leary. Students spent the week learning about elements of art and LINE with play-dough lines and line snakes and line lions in kindergarten! 🖼️

TOMORROW, September 29 is PICTURE DAY! We will take pictures of ALL students. You will receive a code from Jostens when pictures are ready to purchase. ALL purchasing will be through Jostens. 📷

This week is HOMECOMING WEEK at GHS. GPS will join the fun with a three day spirit week. Go Timberwolves! 💜💛

Things I learned from my students last week:
1. Dinosaurs are too big for school.
2. We read from left to right with our super power pointer finger.
3. Pictures and text show clues that help us understand characters and feelings.
4. Numbers come in all forms - standard form (3, 456), expanded form (3,000+400+50+6) and word form (three thousand, four hundred fifty six).
5. Salmon fry are young baby salmon that leave their gravel next and eat on their own in freshwater streams.
6. Salmon smolt migrate to the ocean. They lose their parr marks and turn shiny silver.
7. Short vowel words have vowels and consonants. CVC words have one vowel and two consonants, so the vowel is short.
8. iReady games are fun ways to learn math. Making pizzas, selling pizzas and buying supplies = math.

Happy Friday, GPS Families!

We had a very busy last week of summer! ☀️ It is officially FALL next week. 🍂

Students began their iReady assessments in both reading and math. We are excited to establish this year’s baseline so we can make goals and GROW! 📈

Tuesday, September 29 is Picture Day! 📸

Our Wall of Fame is up and we are looking for our first stars ⭐️ for RESPECT! Ask your child what it means to respect themselves, their school, their teachers and their parents! 🤩

Things I learned from my students this week:
1. The salmon life cycle is brutal. They have to swim up waterfalls! No wonder they are so tired when they get back to their birth stream to spawn. They literally go clear to the ocean and back! 🐟
2. Allegro tempo means the beat is 120-168 beats per minute, like in the song “Who Let the Dogs Out.” 🎶
3. Fun Friday is the best! It makes homework worth it!
4. Principal: “What did you learn from your homework?” Student: “That I don’t like it.” (Who do you think that was?😎)
5. Battleship uses coordinates kind of like graphing (letters on one side and numbers on the other) and north, south, east, west. You need them both to sink a battleship!
6. Slime is just glue and sticky unless you add more activator.
7. Data is information. Your opinion can be data. Asking questions about information is a science. It is data science! 📊 📈
8. Narrative writing is telling a story. A personal narrative is a story about yourself.
9. Characters have traits and so do people. They can be silly, smart, helpful, beautiful, and wild.
10. Reading is talking with words. Math is talking with numbers. Sign language is talking with your hands.🙌

Happy Friday, GPS Families!

We had a long, short week after Labor Day! We are settling into routines and learning a lot about ourselves and each other!

We are still working on RESPECT and beginning to fill up classroom T-Paw jars! Ask your child how to earn a T-Paw and what happens when they fill up a jar! 🐾

Teachers and Staff are looking for leaders in respect for the Wall of Fame. Ask your child what he/she could do to show GREAT RESPECT! 💜💛

iReady testing for the fall benchmark starts next week! We can’t wait to see where we are so that we can continue to GROW in our reading and math!

Things I learned from my students this week:
1. Tempo is finding the beat. The strong beat is always at the first of the measure. 🎼 🎵
2. Incubate means to cover, keep warm, and take care of…like eggs. Birds incubate their eggs by sitting on them. 🪺
3. Tens are special because you can walk with them and do math with them. You have two ten frames with you all the time (fingers and toes) except my uncle. He only has 9. 😳
4. B is the letter of the day…it is blue, bat, best, boy, bird, and Brett.
5. After salmon eggs hatch, they are in the alevin stage. They are 1 inch long and their egg sac makes up 70% of their body weight.
6. The Alevin egg sac is like a snack pac until they have teeth.
7. Plus means add, which makes your number bigger. 5+6=11.
8. The best thing about being an American is that everyone is welcome and we can all be happy and different. 🇺🇸
9. Collaboration means working together and sharing ideas and markers. Sharing is caring.
10. Dave Pilkey spent a lot of time in the hallway as a student because it was hard for him to pay attention. He started to draw and write when he was in the hallway, because his mom said to make the best of it. Now, he is a famous author and illustrator. He wrote Captain Underpants and Dogman. 📚

Happy Friday, GPS Families!

What an AMAZING first week of school! The halls are filled with students. Classrooms are filled with cheerful chatter and learning ideas. The new playground is a HIT! So much joy! 🤩

We enjoyed meeting all of our families and talking about our favorite things…your children! Thank you for your partnership! 💛💜

It was a week filled with practicing, routines, hearing ALL about summer vacations, getting to know our new class families, playing together, problem solving together, and RESPECT! 🥰

Respect is the base for all of the Seven Habits, so we start with what respect looks like and sounds like in our classrooms, hallways, on our playground, in the cafeteria….even at home! Ask your child what RESPECT means!❤️

No School on Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day!

Things I learned from my students this week:
1. Open and shut, open and shut, open and shut, that's how we cut, cut, cut, and the helper hand holds the paper steady.
2. We ONLY cut paper with our scissors.
3. Data is information about a topic.
4. Graphing is a way to show a picture of data.
5. A kind gesture is something you do to show kindness, like hold the door for someone, read to someone, offer your seat, and ask someone to play.
6. Watch out for racoons. They are sneaky. They eat chickens, even the nice ones that let you hold them.
7. Cats become moms too, with 4 cute, tiny baby kittens.
8. There are lots of ways to make $1.00. You can use multiples of like coins (like 100 pennies or 4 quarters) or combinations of coins (like a quarter, 6 dimes, 2 nickels, and 5 pennies).
9. When salmon lay eggs, they die. They return to where they were born (spawn), some lay eggs, and then die.
10. Moms are besties and they even love you! 🥰
11. The Itsy Bitsy Spider must be climbing up the spout, because it rained and I see spider webs.

We are SO excited for the GHS Stadium opening football game THIS Friday, September 4th!

We need your help! We LOVE to support our GHS Timberwolves! Please help us maintain a safe environment by having your children sit with you!

Primary School Students must sit with their parents at sporting events. Students will not be allowed on the court, field, or track surrounding the football field during sporting events. Encourage them to watch the game and cheer for their favorite players!

Happy June, GPS Families!

We have 5 days of school left! Time really does fly when you are having fun and learning with your besties! ❤️

Last week, we extended our learning environments and connected with learning partners in our amazing community! Thank you to FVRL Goldendale Library for hosting our students and supporting reading and learning. 📚

Thank you to KVH for hosting our Kindergarten students and teaching about healthcare and our local hospital! 🏥

Our First Grade students had Zoo Day, where they shared their knowledge and research about their favorite animal! 🦒 🐒🐯🐘🦘

We walked MILES and MILES in the Walk-A-Thon! Stay tuned for totals next week! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

As we wrap up another year, I want to say THANK YOU for your support and partnership! We love your kids and together, we make a GREAT team!🥰

EARLY 11:45 A.M. RELEASE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 12 for the last day of school! 🗓️

Things I learned from my students last week:
1. I got a new haircut! My mom cut my hair into a Mohawk and it looked silly so she cut it off!
2. People can teleport. I just saw that guy by the tree and now he is over here. He teleported. That is the only explanation.
3. 4 laps around the track is a mile. 32 laps is 8 miles and lots of sweat!
4. Habit 7 is taking care of your body, heart, mind, and soul. It is all of the habits put together.
5. Habit 8 is Find your Voice; find your strength and share it with others to inspire them!
6. I walked so many laps that I can’t feel my feet. Are they still there?
7. Otters make good use of tools like opening their clam with rocks, and they eat kelp.
8. Sharks have 300 teeth with a gape width of 3-4 feet and height of 3-5 feet so don’t get near a shark’s mouth!
9. Parrots can have almost every color in the rainbow in their feathers.
10. Dolphins can swim fast in the water and they are mammals.
11. Deer eat plants and live in the forest.
12. Cheetahs are the fastest animal in the world! They run really fast like speed demons. They also eat bunnies! Yikes!
13. Foxes can have as many as 24 dens. They eat small animals.
14. Giraffes eat leaves and live in the Savannah.
15. Whales live in the oceans and like to share their meals with one another, even the killer whales.
16. Kangaroos are mammals and so are dolphins and humans.
17. Monkeys swing from branch to branch in the rain forest.
18. Takis are good, but Fuego. They are full flame!
19. Hospitals help people when they are hurt and they have beds on wheels.
20. Hospitals have machines that can see your insides, like X-ray vision!
