Jeffco has been working with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights on how new federal Title IX guidelines interact with Colorado law. We've been told that continuing to follow state law could put more than $50 million in annual federal funding at risk β funding that supports programs and services for many of our most vulnerable students. At the same time, knowingly violating state law is not an option.
Because federal guidance and state law directly conflict, Jeffco has filed a lawsuit seeking clarity on which direction we must follow. This comes only after months of good-faith efforts to resolve the conflict outside of court, and it does not signal any change in our commitment to students.
We recognize that legal action comes with costs at a time when our district has already made difficult budget reductions. This is not an expense we wanted or one we could avoid, but resolving this conflict will require district resources regardless of the path we take.
Two things remain constant: Jeffco will continue to follow the law, and every student belongs here. Our schools remain committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces where all students are treated with dignity and respect.

Today, when state funding and local voter-approved funding are combined, Jeffco ranks last among neighboring Front Range school districts in total funding per student. That means Jeffco receives about $1,878 less per student each year β a funding gap of nearly $140 million annually. Our students deserve access to the teachers, programs and opportunities that help them thrive. We believe it's time to close the gap and invest in Jeffco's future.
