For Steve ’63 and Carolyn McCandless, planning the future is more than preparing for tomorrow, but about honoring the people, experiences and causes that have shaped their lives.
They continue to honor the life and legacy of Elizabeth “Betsy” McCandless, whose life was tragically cut short by domestic violence. Through their estate plan, Steve and Carolyn help carry forward Betsy’s legacy by supporting Betsy’s Friends Peer Education program, which empowers students to educate their peers about healthy relationships, consent, bystander intervention, recognizing harmful behaviors, and provides resources. Through this work, Betsy’s story continues to inspire a safer, more supportive Mines community.
In honor of National Make-A-Will Month, we’re sharing resources to help you take the first step in creating or updating your estate plan. Explore planning resources and learn how you can plan for the future while supporting the people and causes that matter most to you.

Did you know Mines wasn't always called Colorado School of Mines?
Founded as the Territorial School of Mines (also known as the State School of Mines), the institution officially became the Colorado School of Mines in 1876 when Colorado achieved statehood. The name change reflected its new role as a state institution, established to educate the engineers who would help develop and manage Colorado's rich mineral resources. That mission of innovation and engineering excellence continues to shape the future.
