Learn To Skate Outside - Is a wild ice skating education entity run by Prof. Skater: Laura Kottlowski

This weekend is our last 'Special Figures: Two-Day Blade Control Mastery Workshop’ of the summer. August 1-2 (8:30a-1pm each day) at Apex Center Ice Arena in Arvada, Colorado. Come learn the ‘black ice art’ and edgework of the original masters of our sport! Register at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/august-1-2nd-special-figures-a-two-day-blade-control-mastery-workshop-tickets-1991849274800

In the workshop you’ll have the opportunity to nerd-out and learn (or re-learn!) the history and roots of skating art – ‘Special Figures’, traditionally skated outdoors on black ice, through both in-class and on ice presentations. These workshops focus on skating prior to the 1920s when the same skates were used for both figure-skating and hockey, and skating masters took part in both on outdoor ice!

In total the workshop spans over 8hrs during the two day workshop (8:30am-1pm both days). These workshops are unlike any edge class you’ve attended before and although it could be considered the hardest edge class you'll ever take (even for Olympians) all of the figures you'll learn can also be done on two-feet! Skaters have traveled from across the Nation for its unique educational offering and it is so very fun to just be in this nerdy skating history environment!

(By request, we’ve added a “Day One Only” Saturday ticket option as well)

We are testing out a greater multi-day format this year… 8hrs of edge and blade nerdiness over the course of two days! (August 9th-10th, 2025) — One U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist and coach last year said it was “One of her best skating experiences!”

You could be a pro skater or just passed your intermediate moves, the “playing field” is leveled. In this super fun environment we will all be humbled and laugh at ourselves A LOT and be baffled at how the history of our sports (figure skating & hockey) came from these incredible edge maneuvers and humans back in the day. It’s a workshop you won’t want to miss!

In this jam-packed workshop you’ll learn the art and roots of ice skating for better blade control and advanced skating creativity (think complicated turn sequences and more-than-Cale-Makar-advanced edge work). This workshop is for those looking to achieve mechanical precision with their edges whether that be for the purposes of advanced and elite competition or a new outlet to take their skating further into life: creating incredible blade art on wild ice, competing in the World Figure’s Championships or staying active on the ice with the skills you built earlier in life.

We hope to see you in two weeks!

The final days to sign-up before this weekend’s Advanced Edge Workshop! Built straight from the history books and made to inspire, educate, challenge, and entertain the nerdiest and obsessed skaters out there ➰🤓

See you soon!

By request, we’ve added a “Day One Only” Saturday ticket option

Minimum edge/turn requirements to have fun are: 3-turns, brackets, and power pulls — But if you aren’t there yet and want to learn and lot, have fun, and still nerd-out with us, most things we’ll be doing can be modified to two feet as well!
