There’s something I wish more parents knew about tummy time:
If your baby hates it, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
Over the years, I’ve talked with so many parents who feel like they’re failing at something that was supposed to be simple.
They’ve read that their baby “should” be doing tummy time.
They’ve seen the milestone charts.
They’ve watched videos of other babies happily lifting their heads and looking around.
Meanwhile, their own baby lasts about 30 seconds before crying, arching, burying their face in the floor, or making it very clear that tummy time is officially over.
And then the parent starts wondering:
Should I push through it?
Am I not doing it often enough?
Is my baby behind?
Is there something wrong?
What I’ve learned from working with babies and families is that tummy time isn’t really one activity.
There are so many ways to help a baby build the same strength and skills -on a parent’s chest, across a lap, with support under the chest, in short little bursts throughout the day.
Sometimes one small change completely changes how a baby experiences it.
And sometimes it helps to have someone actually watch your baby, notice what they’re doing, and show you what to try next.
That’s one of the reasons we created our Tummy Time group at Rogue Pediatric Therapies.
It’s not an hour of putting babies on the floor and hoping they tolerate it.
It’s a small group where parents can learn different ways to support tummy time, understand what their baby is telling them, ask questions, and practice with guidance from someone who works with infant development every day.
Our next four-week group begins Wednesdays September 16.
We’re keeping it intentionally small - a maximum of 8 families - so there’s time to actually help each baby and parent.
And if tummy time has been harder than you expected, you are exactly who we had in mind.
