As a credentialed teacher, I pay to renew my credential, I pay for continuing education to keep my credential, and I pay for all of the materials and costs to run my business.

The Protect Education Act wants to make me pay an additional fee just for the privilege of instructing for the ESA Program. It serves no real purpose other than to punish me for working with students who take ESA funds.

It’s not a fee; it’s a fine.

Attached is the new legislation proposed by supporters of Save Our Schools Arizona. These folks are working to erode the ESA Program with modifications that will make the program unusable for many parents and vendors.

Included in this text is a requirement that vendors pay an annual registration fee just to provide services. Additionally, families who make more than $150K per year will be barred from the program, and monies retained at the end of the school year will have to return to the DOE instead of being available for later or college-level use.

There's a LOT more. Read the fine print. Just like the last petition from the same source, please

I was never treated to abuse such as this as a child, but I can remember adults acting oddly and badly towards me when they should have known better. As I grew older, I also grew accustomed to people mistreating me and getting angry with me for reasons that I could not understand, only to put them in a fit of rage when I told them that I couldn't understand what I did to make them so angry. I learned to be silent as to not provoke more hostility.

The story Serenity relates here resonates with me, not so much for its severity as for the lack of sense and reason behind why she was treated to this kind of punishment. Yes, I call it "punishment" because there is no other explanation. Behavior which is perceived as "odd" in this society is punished, even when there are rules put in place to prevent this kind of abuse. I specifically remember again and again people breaking or bending rules in schools and elsewhere just so they could have the freedom to treat me badly. I seemed to almost attract these kinds of people to me, even into early adulthood.

Both of the facilities that Serenity was placed into were shut down for allegations of abuse and misconduct. This was not back in the 1950s and '60s in the age of chlorpromazine, shock treatments, and lobotomies. This happened to her in the LATE 1980s!

If you want to know why autistic people mask, it's because they want to avoid the attention, anger, and vengeance of people who would be offended by their behavior if they didn't. Public school is often where this cycle begins. Many neurodivergent people still feel the emotions of abuse reverberating within them; it is harder for them to "move past it" than it is for n-typicals. You can see it in Serenity's face. She has the courage to talk about this now, but her past experiences will always echo within her.

If your child seems distracted or "daydreaming", it may not be what you think. You can't always hear the inner conversation going on.

Adults have these issues too, and I have to admit that this video hit a bit close to home when I first saw it.

Neurotypical instructors often get frustrated teaching neurodiverse kids because they don't realize how much competition their lessons have in the brains of these children.

This is just a few minutes. Imagine living all day with this going on in your head. I don't have to imagine, but I do know from experience what it's like to be a child like this; I also know how to instruct them, through the chatter, with the chatter.

I'm a teacher, not an agency that hires out tutors by the hour. Being a sole proprietor, when you talk to me about my services, I can guarantee you that I will be the only person who will deliver learning skills to your child.

Hi, I'm Mr. Matthew. I do all of my own stunts.

I teach from the heart and use the best of my twenty-three years of experience to give your children educations that will fit their individual learning levels, styles, and approaches. Your child may be eight years old and ready for algebra; or eighteen, burned out and dejected from previous teachers' failed approaches. Regardless, your child can approach me AS THEY ARE.

I teach all core subjects up to 10th grade and beyond, driven by a lifetime love of learning. If you are interested, please 🦉 and let's discuss how I can take your child under my wing and help them grow academically and functionally. Send me a DM here or email me at [email protected].

Every SpEd teacher can tell you about the satisfaction of seeing children with the "I got it" look in their eyes.

For me though, the most special moments are where I can see that moments of fogginess, or incidents of going off track, that were constantly there on past lessons, suddenly become infrequent or almost non-existent. These are the times when the student goes beyond just the understanding of mechanics and has gained in mental acuity.

These students may still have the same areas of need, but the skills you have taught have helped the students to deal with them in the independent ways that they will need for their adult lives. This is the "bigger picture" of education, where it meets greater confidence, maturity and mastery.

I just taught a student today how to determine the square root of a number out to three decimal places. Both the mathematical process and the process of teaching her were both extremely satisfying and made for a very successful and enjoyable lesson.
