In Graphic Design II, we have been learning about the (brief) history of graphic design. As part of their chapter 2 project, students could do one of two projects. Courtney Adams chose the Designer Style Poster project, which included:

Create a poster on a twentieth-century graphic designer. Focus on one main point—something you discovered about that person. Consider how he or she might have used metaphor, humor, abstraction, structure, or the vernacular to connect with an audience. Teach us, but also entertain us. Full color. Size: 18″ × 24.”

Things to Consider: Let this piece be a document of your research, seen through your own eyes.

Courtney shared, "Chester Don Powell (1896–1964) was a prominent WPA (Work Projects Administration) artist and the chief designer behind the iconic, screen-printed National Park Service posters of the late 1930s. So I made his portrait in the shape of the national parks logo and used his style of poster making while doing so."

Adobe Illustrator (CGRD 144) students are building more complex illustrations utilizing layers, as well as experimenting with color palettes and gradients. For our illustrations we used food as the subject matter, yum!

Pictured here is Tristin Meyer's illustration of avocado toast! 🥑 🍞 One version uses flat color swatches and the other one utilizes gradients to give it some dimension.

Our Graphic Design II students had the opportunity, again this year, to work with a real client by creating two cover designs for the Great Rivers Choral Society. Their board will select ONE design to be featured on the front cover of their 2026-2027 program booklet.

Students had the opportunity to ask Nancy questions, research the project, and work through the design process while meeting the deadline for the project to go to the professional printer.

The L&C Graphic Design II or III class has had the privilege over the last 20+ years to contribute to this amazing community organization.

Students in CGRD 144 (Adobe Illustrator) have been learning how the pen tool functions, using both step-by-step instructions and by creating their own illustrations.

Featured here is Dylan Meshey's illustration of a rubber ducky isopod! 🐛 These little isopods are real (real cute!) and they have a distinctive bright yellow duck-face which makes them stand out among other species of isopods.

Interested in taking our Graphic Design classes? CGRD 162-01: Graphic Design II is Mon/Wed from 8:45-10:50am, starting Monday, August 24. Tara's class is Virtual with Zoom.

We will build on basic design, emphasizing typography, illustration, symbol, logo, poster, and publication design. Assignments will include graphic design exercises + projects focusing on the functional and aesthetic use of parts, form, color, and typography that leads to effective visual communication.

There is still time to enroll!

Featured here is Madison Rea's design for Lilac Lattes ☕ Her concept is a coffee product that has a light lilac flavor similar to taro boba tea, yum!
