Email from Angie Steele, Kitchen Manager at Goddard Academy on April 2, 2026

I am writing to recognize Derek Swingle, Assistant Director for Maintenance, for his exceptional service while our ice machine was down for repairs from March 24th through April 1st.

On March 30th, March 31st, and April 1st, Derek took the initiative to transport my cooler to GHS and fill it with ice so that the staff and I could have water and tea while he worked to repair our machine. Derek went above and beyond his standard duties, and his diligence and helpfulness are greatly appreciated.

While most of the community was staying warm inside, this incredible maintenance team was outside doing the hard work that makes a safe return to school possible.

On Sunday, January 25th, and again early Monday morning, January 26th, our very own USD 265-Facilities, Maintenance & Operations staff were out across the district clearing snow from parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, and entrances, ensuring school buildings are safe and accessible for students, staff, and families.

These moments from USD 265-Clark Davidson Elementary School, USD 265-Discovery Intermediate School, and USD 265-Challenger Intermediate School are a snapshot of the pride, grit, and dedication behind the scenes. Snow storms do not stop this team from showing up, problem solving, and taking care of our schools.

Their work may happen before sunrise and behind the scenes, but its impact is felt by every student and staff member who walks through the doors. Thanks to this hard-working team for going above and beyond for the !

Our Building Engineers are the heart of our schools. Without them, our district wouldn’t be able to function on a daily basis. They work hard every day, paying attention to small details that make our buildings a welcoming place to be!

Today is Custodian Appreciation Day, and we’d like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to each and every member of the USD 265-Facilities & Maintenance team that serves our buildings, keeping them clean and safe for students, staff, and visitors throughout the year. Because of the dedicated efforts of this driven team, Goddard Public School facilities are safe, secure, caring, and connected learning environment for students. Head Building Engineers often work behind the scenes, but their work is what keeps this District running smoothly each and every day!

If you see any of these hard-working people this week, please stop and thank them for all they do. We are lucky to have such phenomenal, beloved cleaning crews! Today and every day your efforts are noticed and appreciated. Thanks for everything you do to help produce pride, growth, and excellence for our !

Shout out to USD 265-Eisenhower High School staff and our super star building engineer Matt Huffman for working as a team to help your coworker!

From Steph Robinson:
Happy Open House night! I wanted to share how thankful I am to work with such amazing people.

My tire was flatter than a pancake after our teacher training today and multiple people stepped up for me to ensure I got home safely!

I want to thank Mikala Thomas and Michelle Cottingham for saving the day and alerting me my tire went flat. SPED teacher MVPs right there.

I also want to thank Tenacious Todd for coming out to help in the chaos that is open house when we could not find a lug wrench. Shout out to THE Evan Manning for pulling up to make sure we got it done and helped with loading my pancake tire back in the car ✅

And, of course... Drum roll, please... Building engineer Matt Huffman went out of his way to change my tire for me and honestly was just so incredible! I love our building engineers.

I am so lucky to work with such awesome people. You guys have captured my heart. 😎♥️

Photography credits go Michelle.
