TURN THE VOLUME UP PLEASE

Frances West has been driving a school bus since 1976.

Back then, many school buses were Chevrolets with big block gas engines and four speed transmissions. Over 50 years, Frances has seen just about everything change, from the buses themselves to seating, safety equipment, technology, and transportation operations.

But that is not what sets Frances apart.

As we begin another school year, she is teaching all of us a lesson about leadership: lead by example.

For five decades, Frances has safely carried thousands of students to school, home, athletic events, field trips, and activities. More than 7,000 students have been entrusted to her care along the way.

Frances represents what we want leadership to look like in GCPS: Accountability, Communication, Teamwork, Integrity, and Leadership. ACTIL. She is the example to follow.

Her advice to brand new bus drivers says it all:

“Give it everything you’ve got, and then give a little more after that.”

Those are great words to live by for every teacher, bus driver, administrator, and staff member in GCPS.

Ms. Frances, you gave it your all for 50 years, then came back to give a little more.

Here’s to another school year, and hopefully many more.

Thank you for your service, your leadership, and for keeping generations of Gloucester students safe. You lead by example.

Student Engagement, Day 3.

Automotive Technology instructor Mr. Calloway knows how to get students’ attention. Nothing quite says engagement like the sound of a supercharged 6.2L LT4 Camaro V8 coming to life.

CTE is for everyone because CTE makes academics real.

Want to become a better writer? Learn how to cut hair, then explain the process clearly and precisely.

Want to understand history and culture? Learn to cook a recipe, then study where it came from and the people who created it.

Want to become a better problem solver? Build a bench. Wire a circuit. Diagnose an engine that will not run.

CTE requires students to gather information, solve problems, test solutions, make adjustments and produce something tangible. When it works, students experience something powerful: pride in their own work.

That is also why career readiness, work based learning and industry credentials are part of Virginia’s graduation expectations and its 3E framework of Enrollment, Employment and Enlistment.

CTE does not replace reading, writing, math, science or history. It gives students a reason to use them. A real world reason to learn!

Day two, and we’re celebrating strong results while keeping our focus on what comes next.

Last year’s results show that GCPS is outperforming Virginia in every core tested area, ranking 1st in Region III in Math, 2nd in Reading and 3rd in Science. But we will not rest on our laurels.

This year, we are implementing new, or continuing to implent, HQIM high-quality instructional materials in Reading and Math for grades K–12, building on our progress and strengthening teaching and learning across the division.

At the same time, 92.6% of our teachers plan to remain at their school, and students report feeling safer than regional and state averages.

High achievement. Strong people. Safe schools. A new year of promise.

Thank you to our students, staff, families, School Board and Board of Supervisors for making these results possible,and for helping us continue moving forward.

We are just a few days away from the start of a new school year in Gloucester!

Virginia also has new SOL cut scores this year. The SOLs are more than an end of year test. They reflect the curriculum our students learn every day. When students are engaged in rigorous instruction, reading, writing, thinking, solving problems, and doing the work, they will be ready to demonstrate what they know.

It’s almost FOOTBALL TIME in Gloucester! 🏈

The GPS robot is out painting the field at Duke Stadium and getting everything ready for the scrimmage.

Only one problem. This robot is wearing the wrong uniform. Somebody paint it Duke red! 🔴

While some school divisions are canceling JV football teams because of declining participation, the Dukes have 85 players and growing across JV and Varsity.

Gloucester loves football. Our kids are showing up. Our coaches are putting in the work. And this community is ready.

We are excited for the season ahead.

We are pleased to welcome Kristen Connelly to GCPS as Assistant Principal at Peasley Middle School.

Kristen currently serves as Dean of Students at Middlesex Elementary School, where she works closely with students, teachers, families, counselors, and administrators. Her experience includes supporting student behavior and discipline, using data to develop interventions, supporting PBIS initiatives, mentoring teachers in classroom management strategies, developing individualized student supports, and strengthening family engagement. She also serves on her school's leadership team, contributing to work related to school culture, attendance, student behavior, and family engagement.

Before moving into administration, Kristen served as both a PreK and fifth grade teacher and team leader. Her leadership preparation has provided additional experience with classroom walkthroughs, student performance data, school improvement planning, budgeting, school safety, SOL testing, special education processes, and student discipline.

Kristen earned her bachelor's degree and Master of Arts in Teaching from James Madison University and completed her PK through 12 Administration and Supervision endorsement through William & Mary.

Her combination of classroom and administrative experience provides a strong foundation for supporting students and teachers. Her focus on relationships, positive school culture, student support, and family engagement will be an asset to the Peasley leadership team.

We are excited to announce Sadie Monastyrly, formerly Melago, as GCPS Coordinator of Instructional Coaching, supporting teaching and learning across grades K through 12. Sadie currently serves as a fourth grade reading teacher at Petsworth Elementary School and has demonstrated a strong commitment to student learning, collaboration, and the professional growth of educators.

Anyone who has ever visited Sadie’s classroom, would agree she is a master teacher. Within GCPS, she has provided professional learning on collective teacher efficacy and understanding student behavior, served as a SURN Master Teacher, participated in the Aspiring Leaders Program, and contributed to several school and division committees. Her graduate work focused on collective teacher efficacy, student behavior, and the use of data and research informed practices to strengthen teaching and learning.

Sadie earned both her bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Elementary Education and her Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Longwood University. She also holds an Administration and Supervision PreK through 12 endorsement.

In her new division wide role, Sadie will build on that experience by collaborating with instructional coaches, teachers, school leaders, and division staff. Her work will focus on strengthening instructional practices, supporting meaningful professional learning, and helping ensure educators have the tools and support they need to meet the needs of students from kindergarten through high school.

We are proud to see Sadie continue her leadership journey within GCPS and look forward to the impact of her work across our schools. Sadie will begin her new role on Monday, August 17, 2026.

We are excited to welcome Paul White back to Gloucester High School as Athletic Director. Paul brings 30 years of experience in education and athletics, including service as an athletic director, teacher, and coach at the high school and collegiate levels. He is also a certified Athletic Director through the Virginia High School League. For Paul, this opportunity is a return home.

A graduate of Gloucester High School, he has served GHS as both a teacher and head football coach. During his previous time at GHS, he worked to increase student participation, strengthen program organization, improve facilities, develop coaching staff, and build relationships with families and the community.

Paul's leadership experience includes supervising coaches, managing athletic budgets and facilities, coordinating schedules and events, overseeing student eligibility, and supporting VHSL requirements. His experience as an administrator, educator, and coach gives him a broad perspective on the role athletics plays in the lives of students and in the school community.

Paul played as a Duke, taught as a Duke, and coached as a Duke. We are excited to welcome him back as he builds relationships and trust with students, coaches, staff, families, and the community. We look forward to the work ahead to strengthen athletic opportunities while fostering student growth, sportsmanship, and school pride.

Paul's first day will be Monday, August 24, 2026. We thank the coaches, teachers, community members, and parents who served on the hiring panel for their time and thoughtful work throughout the selection process.

We are also grateful to Mr. Baker for his service as interim Athletic Director. To support a smooth transition, Paul and CJ will overlap duties and responsibilities from August 24 through September 1.

Today, we welcomed 29 phenomenal new teachers to Gloucester County Public Schools!

Our theme was simple: Know Thy Impact.

You may never fully know the impact you will have on your students. A word of encouragement. A high expectation. Believing in a student when they don’t yet believe in themselves. Those moments matter.

Some of our highest performing teachers in Gloucester came to education as career switchers. They brought their life experiences, skills, and perspectives into the classroom and became impact makers. Others have dedicated their entire careers to this profession and continue to set the standard for excellence.

Different paths. One purpose. Making a difference for kids.

To our newest teachers, you were hired to contribute to our culture of excellence, not simply adapt to it. Learn from the great teachers around you, bring your own strengths to the team, and help us continue raising the bar.
