Happy Shark Appreciation Day from the Multispecies Research Group! 🦈

Data from the VIMS Shark Survey show that populations of large coastal sharks were severely depleted between the late 1970s and the early 1990s. These data informed the implementation of shark-management measures in Virginia in 1990, and by the federal government in 1993.

Here's to appreciating sharks today, and every day!

Not every nursery has four walls... 🦈

Meet a baby we've tagged and released this week during our Bay survey.

The Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore lagoons provide vital pupping and nursery habitat for sandbar sharks. COASTSPAN surveys up and down the coast help monitor these young sharks during one of the most important stages of their lives. 💙

Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊

Wanna see a deep-sea squat lobster? Last month our nearshore industry-science collab forged into the open ocean for 17 days, completing 39 stations, and finding many species we hadn't caught before. Stay tuned for more as we continue processing the data from this pilot project (RIBTS).
