Does your child struggle to sound out unfamiliar words, read accurately, or spell—even with practice?

I’m Sarah Hess, the educator behind Snack & Recess. I provide individualized structured literacy instruction for beginning and struggling readers, including children with dyslexia.

As a dyslexia-endorsed, Orton–Gillingham-trained educator with two master’s degrees and more than 20 years of experience, I use assessment to identify where instruction should begin. Lessons are explicit, carefully sequenced, and adjusted as your child learns.

Virtual tutoring and reading assessments are available.

Message this page to tell me a little about your child and ask about current availability.

Snack & Recess is growing—soon, families beyond Rhode Island can join us for virtual tutoring!

We're expanding my services to offer personalized online reading support, bringing my experience as a certified educator, dyslexia-endorsed teacher, and Orton-Gillingham-trained tutor to families at home.

Sessions will focus on the skills your child needs, with clear instruction, encouragement, and opportunities to actively practice.

If your child is struggling with letter sounds, sounding out words, or reading confidently, I’d love to hear what you’re noticing.

Interested? Send me a message with your child’s grade and what you’d like help with, and we can explore whether virtual sessions would be a good fit.

Know a family who might be interested—even outside Rhode Island? Please share! 💛

Need a break from worksheets? Try this letter-tracing sensory bag.

A little sensory change of pace for letter practice!

Add liquid soap to a gallon-size Ziploc bag and seal it well. Place a letter card underneath, then invite your child to trace the letter on top of the bag with a finger. As they trace, have them name the letter and say its sound.

Why try it? It gives kids another way to look closely at a letter and practice its shape, without picking up a pencil or filling in another worksheet. A short hands-on activity can refresh practice while keeping the focus on the letter.

This is a practice activity—not a replacement for explicit teaching, writing, or plenty of review. Just one more playful way to revisit letters and sounds!

Meet Karen! 👋

Karen Bucci is a Rhode Island certified elementary teacher with more than 20 years of classroom experience. She and I first worked together at the Henry Barnard Laboratory School, and I’m delighted that families can now work with her at Snack & Recess.

Karen helps children build skills in reading comprehension, writing, spelling and word study, and math. She has also completed Orton–Gillingham classroom educator coursework. Her lessons are thoughtful, hands-on, and shaped around the child in front of her—with plenty of room for movement, art, and games.

One of Karen’s favorite things about tutoring is the chance to slow down, get creative, and work at a student’s pace. She’s an artist, a dancer, a historical fiction reader, and a black belt in karate, so she brings a lot of interests and energy to the table!

Karen is welcoming new elementary tutoring students at our Chepachet studio. Send us a message if you’d like to talk about whether she’d be a good fit for your child.

What happens during a first tutoring session?

We absolutely want children to feel comfortable and connected—but we also want families to leave that first session with useful information.

While getting to know your child, we begin informally identifying:
• What skills already feel secure
• Where your child may be getting stuck
• Which strategies help
• What we should work on next

For a young reader, that might mean discovering that most letter sounds are secure, but digraphs or blending still need support.

For an older student, it might mean identifying the organizational system—or missing academic skill—that is making school feel harder than it should.

Every child is different, so every tutoring plan should be different, too.

We’re currently enrolling a small number of students for individualized tutoring in Chepachet. Tell us about your child here:

Keep the learning. Skip the worksheets.

At Snack and Recess, reading practice is playful, purposeful, and built around your child—not another stack of worksheets.

We use hands-on activities, movement, games, and carefully chosen books to strengthen the skills your child needs while rebuilding confidence and enjoyment.

- Individualized reading, math, and homework support for elementary students
- In person in Chepachet
- Message me to ask about current openings or schedule a first session.

A reluctant reader may not dislike reading—they may simply not have found the right book yet.

Try starting with what they already love: sports, animals, mysteries, humor, facts, video games—anything that sparks curiosity. Graphic novels, audiobooks, magazines, and books you read together all count, too.

The goal isn’t to force a particular book. It’s to help each child discover that reading can belong to them.

What book finally hooked your reluctant reader?
