Packrafting: Foundational Principles

Gila Region Spring 2024 Update

Fool's day - boat-able flows are IN on all Gila Region river segments, including: West Fork Gila, Gila Wilderness, Gila Middle Box, Gila Lower Box, AZ Gila Box RNCA, Upper Blue River, Lower Blue River, Middle San Francisco River, San Fran WSA (incl. Dos and Tres Rios). Some feeder creeks are cycling in and out of boat-able flow range. Expect moderate flows to persist throughout the month of April on most river segments.

Gila Region Spring 2024 Paddling Outlook - The combination of inconsistent winter precipitation and seasonably normal temperatures will likely contribute to a moderate, but more historically "normal" spring run-off this year. Given these factors, anticipate run-off to begin trickling in the week of 18 March and continue for 3-4 weeks, possibly peaking ~ 1 April. That said, this is merely a forecast based on GAILS local knowledge of regional watershed dynamics.

While the traditional monsoon paddling season (7/15-9/15) has commenced, this year could be a brut "nonsoon" compared to 2022. Nonetheless, Z and I are ready to help make your summertime Gila Region adventures happen OR just come for the riverside camping, llamas and disc golf course!

Gila Region trip reports 4/12/23
AZ Gila Box NRCA (Old Safford Bridge to Dry Canyon) - no river-wide strainers.
Gila Wilderness (Grapevine to Box Canyon) - Spring winds have caused ~ 4 new strainers to fall across the main channel from eroded banks. Most of these are in the heart of the wilderness, RM 8 to 25. Use caution at low flows, where channel width/depth is more restricting.
Gila Middle Box (BCA to Redrock) - Launching from center Bird Conservation Area RAP (Sanctuary Trail) the run is mostly clean, only 2 minor (avoidable strainers) in last 1 mile. Caution - 3/4" braided steel cable is down, spanning all the way across the river channel (2' above water level), about 2 miles above Redrock Bridge Note: there is enough slack that this cable can be lifted over your head, as you paddle underneath.
Gila Lower Box (Redrock to Virden) - Ten strainers, 1/2 mandatory portage.
San Francisco Middle Box (Alma to Pleasanton) - Launching from Mineral Creek = no river-wide strainers.
San Francisco WSA (Pleasanton, NM to Clifton, AZ) - 15 strainers, ~ 1/2 mandatory portage.
