⚡ Courage Has Four Muscles

This season, we’ve talked a lot about courage—and I want our athletes to understand that courage isn’t just doing something scary.

Courage is a skill we can practice.

I recently came across four ideas that give us a great framework for teaching it:

1️⃣ Be Vulnerable — Try even when you’re nervous, uncertain, or might fail.

2️⃣ Live Your Values — Do what you know is right, even when doing the wrong thing would be easier.

3️⃣ Build Trust — Keep your word, own your mistakes, and be someone others can count on.

4️⃣ Learn to Rise — You WILL fail. You WILL get knocked down. Courage is learning how to get back up.

Here’s the parenting challenge this week:

Catch courage happening.

Instead of only saying “Great job!”, identify the courage you saw:

"You were nervous and tried anyway."
"Nobody was watching, and you still did the right thing."
"That didn't go your way, but you got back up."

When we give kids the language to recognize courage, they start recognizing it in themselves.

And eventually, “I did something courageous” becomes:

“I am courageous.”

⚡ DON'T LET THEIR 94 MAKE YOU ASHAMED OF YOUR 93

I'll admit it—I've been slacking a little on our VOLT Minutes this summer! Starting in September, we're back every week. ⚡

But I recently read about the Last Soul Ultra in Germany and had to share this one.

Every hour, runners complete a 4.17-mile loop. Make it back in time, and you keep going.

After nearly FOUR DAYS, only two remained: Mark and Ello.

Both completed 93 loops—nearly 388 miles.

Then Ello couldn't continue.

Mark completed one more loop and won.

Think about that.

Ello ran for 93 hours and nearly 388 miles...and technically finished second.

We have to be careful not to teach our kids that someone else's achievement somehow makes theirs smaller.

There will always be someone who runs farther, scores higher, jumps higher, or wins the trophy.

Two reminders this week:

1️⃣ Praise the performance, not just the placement. Ask: "Are you proud of what you gave?"

2️⃣ Don't compare their 93 to someone else's 94. Someone else's success doesn't erase yours.

Our kids don't always have to finish first to be proud of how far they've gone.

Don't let someone else's 94 make you ashamed of your 93.
