Russian School of Mathematics

Russian School of Mathematics RSM is an award winning, after-school math program for K-12 students with over 80 locations around the world.

Since 1997, RSM has helped children develop math fluency, intellect, and character, empowering them for life. Twenty-five years ago, the Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) emerged from a partnership between a passionate parent and a gifted teacher. As a mother, Inessa Rifkin believed that it was her responsibility to provide her children with the tools to succeed. As a teacher, Irina Khavinson be

lieved that the combination of a good teacher and great curriculum can unlock the potential in every child. As immigrants, they both were convinced that the road to a great education begins with a strong foundation in mathematics. The school we have built is based on a simple observation: a math curriculum should be focused on understanding, not memorization. In Russia, every mathematical formula and rule had to be proven. Students were taught to ask "why?," which develops logic, reasoning, and problem-solving skills instead of "how?," which only develops short-term memory. We decided to open a school to raise a generation of learners able to reason logically and abstractly to solve problems. We have spent over a decade developing a unique curriculum to achieve this goal. In today's competitive world, we take great pride in knowing that our program has demonstrated measurable results for thousands of our graduates. We hope we can be a resource for your family.

Meet Taylor Lesnick, the new principal of RSM-Port Credit, our newest Canadian branch! Taylor has an M.S. in Mathematics from McMaster University and has over 10 years of experience teaching students of different ages and learning levels.

Like a lot of RSM teachers, Taylor's favorite teaching moments are the "aha" moments when a student who has been struggling with a concept finally understands it. He finds it incredibly rewarding to see that epiphany, the brightness in the eyes, and their sense of accomplishment.

Taylor is passionate about math and math education and was excited to discover that RSM's methodology was closely aligned with his own teaching philosophy.

Outside of work, Taylor enjoys video games and world cinema.

If a student isn't passionate about a math-centric career, what is the benefit of after-school math classes?

We've received this question numerous times over the years, as the concept of extra math classes or an after school math program can be surprising to some. We're here to share 3 reasons why we believe math truly matters.

Our interns just wrapped up RSM’s first-ever Summer Internship Program, and it was a grand success!

These interns are also current and former RSM students, some of whom have been with us since 2nd grade. For years, they’ve experienced RSM from the classroom. This summer, they had the opportunity to see it from a whole new perspective: from the inside.

Working alongside our HQ teams, they gained hands-on experience in market analysis, digital campaigns, software development, business processes, and more, putting their skills into practice beyond the classroom.

We’re so proud of everything they accomplished and loved having their energy, curiosity, and fresh ideas at HQ this summer!

One of our goals at RSM is to instill in our students a mathematical mindset. This means helping our students develop:

- The ability to reason
- The ability to navigate the abstract
- A strong intellectual character, built from persisting through challenging problems

A mathematical mindset not only results in strong math skills, but also self-assured students. Students who are repeatedly shown that their reasoning, understanding, and taste for persistence give them the confidence to solve extremely challenging concepts. Math competitions may not be something you or your child has considered but they offer benefits that extend far beyond math. From building confidence and problem-solving skills to learning how to manage time, embrace challenges, and perform under pressure, competitions help students develop skills they can use in the classroom and beyond.
