Learning Latin and Greek Roots of English Words (Part 2)

Spring 2023 Educational Enrichment Class for Homeschooled Students aged 7-10 (older students welcome, too) Limited to 10 students

Begins March 13 and ends May 15 (May 22 can be used if needed to make up for possible snow day)

This spring session follows and builds upon the Fall 2022 session, but it is accessible for students who have not taken the fall session. The class provides a strong background for students who wish to take Beginning Latin in Fall 2023.

Join us for a 10-week session that explores the Latin and Greek roots of many common English words. Each class period will be 75-minutes long. Day, location, and time TBD.

Students will be introduced to Latin verbs in the present tense, Latin nouns, and some Greek nouns and adjectives. We learn word structure (prefixes, roots, and suffixes), recognize patterns in verb endings, reinforce grammar concepts and sentence structure, and expand our Greek, Latin, and English vocabularies.

In this session, students will be asked to work at home on occasion to fill out “Use What You Know” worksheets. The worksheets ask students to use the context of a sentence to decide which word from the word bank best fills in the blank. The word bank consists of English derivatives of Greek and Latin roots that we have already learned.

Additionally, I strongly urge students to spend 5-10 minutes every day writing and saying the verb endings for first-conjugation verbs and for fourth-conjugation Latin verbs. “A little every day” is the best way to master this skill.

Instructor: Professor Carrie Bates from SUNY Potsdam

Materials: Please provide a notebook and pencil (for note-taking). I will provide note sheets for each session that will guide the students as they take notes.

Skills Addressed:

• Word Structure (linguistic morphology)
• Sentence Structure (linguistic semantics)
• Vocabulary (English, Greek, and Latin)
• Grammar (English and Latin)
• Note-Taking

Cost per student per 10-week session is $200

Ancient Civilizations II.

(A Deeper Dive) Researching Ancient Civilizations with Jack and Annie and the Magic Treehouse

Spring 2023 Educational Enrichment Class for Homeschooled Students (aged 10+ recommended) Limited to 10 students

Begins March 13 and ends May 15 (May 22 can be used if needed to make up for possible snow day)

This class provides opportunities for students to take a deeper look at the civilizations visited in Ancient Civilizations I (Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, Ancient Japan, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome) and to share their findings with their classmates. Students in this class must be able to work outside class to conduct research and must be willing to share their research with their classmates when we meet each week. Each class period will be 75-minutes long. Day, location, and time TBD.

Students do not need to take Ancient Civilization I to take this class, but they must read the Magic Treehouse books assigned in Ancient Civilization I and listed below.

Note that students who take both Ancient Civilizations I and II will be in a structured classroom setting for a total of 2 and ½ hours. This can be a challenge for some students who are not accustomed to or comfortable with a highly regulated learning environment. Much of that time will be spent listening to peers summarize stories and present research. The ability to listen well and to treat peers with respect is vital to the success of these back-to-back classes.

Instructor: Professor Carrie Bates from SUNY Potsdam

Materials: Magic Treehouse Books

# 3 – “Mummies in the Morning” (Ancient Egypt)

# 14 – “Day of the Dragon King” (Ancient China)

# 13 – “Vacation under the Volcano” (Ancient Rome)

We will spend 2 weeks on each civilization. Students will choose from a variety of research projects* and will present their findings at least once during the two weeks allotted for each civilization. If the class size is small, students will present twice during the two weeks allotted for each civilization.

Skills Addressed:

• Researching
• Listening
• Public Speaking

Cost per student per 10-week session is $200. Students who take both classes (Ancient Civilizations I and II) receive a $25 discount.

Location TBD (possibly the Crandall Library in Glens Falls)

*Sample research projects:

• Fact-checking: Select three facts from the story you read. Check those facts to be sure that they are true. Tell your classmates those three facts and explain how you checked them.
• Maps: Draw a map of the country that you read about. Describe the geography of the country.
• Customs: Select a custom of the civilization that you read about. Create an artifact that is like one used in that custom.
• Other books: Read and summarize another book that explores the civilization you read about in Magic Treehouse.
• Crosswords and Word-Searches: Create a crossword puzzle or a word search that uses words that describe unique features of the civilization you read about. Share copies with your classmates.
• Acrostic poems: Create an acrostic poem using a word or short phrase that is unique to the civilization you read about.
• Match game: Create a gods and goddesses match game for your classmates to play.
