New Fumigation Category License & Upcoming Credit Opportunities

MSU Pesticide Education recently notified applicators of updates to Private Applicator license
requirements. The basic license still requires 6 recertification credits within each five-year cycle.

If you need to know the number of credits you still need before January 1, 2027 you can check your status at:
https://agr.mt.gov/Pesticide-Training-Recertification-Program
Or call the Extension office.

New Fumigation Category License
Beginning in 2026, private applicators must obtain a fumigation category license to purchase and apply non-soil fumigants. This includes commonly used products such as phosphide gas
grain-bin pellets and prairie-dog control gas pellets. This change aligns with updated federal regulations.
A presentation and testing session will be held:
• March 24, 2026 – 4:00 p.m at the Miles City Fairgrounds in the 4-H Building
• Covers required information and includes a group, open-book testing session
• Anticipated to be worth 2 recertification credits
Please pre-register by March 17 so adequate materials can be prepared. Cost is $15.

Passing the Reins: A Succession Planning Workshop on Monday, March 16, 2026, 8am-5pm in Miles City, Montana.

The workshop will dive into the legal side of succession as well as the lesser-discussed interpersonal dynamics that can make the process so challenging.
- A panel discussion of farmers and ranchers who have creatively and successfully navigated succession will offer their perspectives
- Break-out sessions for both experienced and beginning agrarians will give participants an opportunity to learn from their peers.
- Those who attend the workshop will leave with a toolkit for knowing what questions to ask as they start their succession planning journey.

Coffee, light snacks, and lunch will be provided.

Registration is open on their website, and offering a tiered pay structure, making it affordable for anyone who wants to attend.

To make this hands-on workshop possible, we are seeking a suitable maple or boxelder tree within the community that can be tapped for demonstration purposes. If you have a tree on your property and would be willing to allow it to be used for this educational workshop, we would greatly appreciate your support.
