Big Sky State Games 2026 Recap

What a weekend celebrating sport, community, and Montana pride at the Big Sky State Games!

Dawson Community College was proud to serve as the sponsor of the Montana 100m Race and participate in the Opening Ceremonies festivities. The weekend began with an inspiring press conference, where we had the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of several Olympians about their journeys to the world's biggest stage.

Before Mother Nature had other plans, a steady stream of prospective students and their families stopped by the DCC information table to learn more about becoming a Buccaneer. Although thunderstorms delayed the Opening Ceremonies by nearly two hours, the skies eventually cleared, and the Games were back on track.

Several members of the Buccaneer family delivered outstanding performances:

🏆 Ase Ackerman, a Glendive native, captured the men's Montana Mile title.
🥉 Peyton Summers, competing for the Dawson Athletic Club, finished third with a personal-best performance.
🥇 Savannah Elizaldi, also representing the Dawson Athletic Club, ran a personal best to win the 400 meters and added a runner-up finish in the triple jump.
💪 Taylor Hanson recorded a personal best in the weight throw while also competing in the discus and hammer throw.
🏀 Tytan Hanson helped lead his basketball team to the championship game, while fellow Buccaneer Zakai Owens also showcased his talents during the Games.

The Big Sky State Games truly are Montana's Olympic-style celebration of athletic excellence, and we were honored to be part of it.

"We look forward to being an event sponsor at the Games next year!" said DCC Assistant Director of Marketing Dempster Jackson.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit us. We'll see you in 2027!

The students may have departed the ship for a well-earned summer break, but June was anything but quiet. While our skeleton crew remained busy swabbing the deck, making repairs, and preparing campus for the return of students, faculty, and staff this fall, Dawson Community College continued to welcome visitors from across the region.

🩰 𝐋𝐚𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚'𝐬 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 filled Toepke Auditorium with talent and creativity during its annual recital.

🏀 𝐁𝐨𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 kept the Toepke Center buzzing for weeks as young athletes learned new skills, competed, and had fun.

🏐 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩 brought the next generation of players to campus for skill development, teamwork, and plenty of fun on the court.

🍔 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥 & 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥 once again brought the community together for a successful fundraiser supporting local healthcare initiatives.

📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐀𝐀𝐄 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 welcomed educators from across Montana to the Ullman Center for several days of collaboration and professional development.

🚔 Law enforcement officers, EMTs, and Fire & Rescue personnel participated in 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 held in the basement of DCC's Main Hall, strengthening emergency response coordination and preparedness.

🦖 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 called DCC home during its Paleo Camp as part of the College for Kids Summer Program, with campers staying in our residence halls while exploring eastern Montana's rich paleontological resources.

🏐 𝐀 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 rounded out the month, bringing teams from across the region to compete inside the Toepke Center.

Summer may be our quieter season, but there's always something happening for the Buccaneers. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another outstanding academic year!
