For the WestMEC Governing Board Members:

As a parent of a junior who is so excited to begin his program at WestMEC Northeast campus, I implore the board members to consider returning to in person learning as soon as possible. I believe many parents agree that with regard to safety precautions, WestMEC is a unique situation in the educational setting in several respects.

With smaller classes physical distancing requirements and will make the ingress and egress if the facilities easier. Since West-MEC I’m not your “traditional campus” there is not food service or other areas outside of the initial arrival and final exit of the students throughout the day, which limits exposure to not only students but the staff as well.

The students which are comprised of high school juniors and seniors who have a higher level of a maturity level and can be held responsible for their own behavior and accountability like mask wearing and physical distancing.

WestMEC programs are unique in that hands-on, in-person instruction is required. The practical and vocational skills and experiences offered by WestMEC are paramount, not only to the students but to our society as well, but it will be meaningless if the courses are offered only on-line.

In fact, to help with this point Mike Rowe, the famous actor and outspoken supporter of the trades has said without programs such as WestMEC and other technical education programs, the services that so many of us rely on daily, will soon start to decline unless we have vocational and technical education programs for our young people and also to change the narrative that a four year degree is no longer required.

What WestMEC offers not only to your students but to the entire state, is highly trained, professionally trained and certified individuals who are excited about starting in their chosen career fields and to break this ongoing issue we have of people loaning money to young people for educations in programs that are no longer valid.

I have spoken to many of the kids in my sons HVAC program and they know and understand what would be required of them, with physical distancing and masks, and they have said they want to get in the classroom and lab, in their uniforms and start in person hands on instruction.

I know I am not alone as a parent in encouraging the WestMEC Governing Board to return our students to in-person learning as soon as possible. Your students' futures should not be delayed any longer; please trust them to be professional and resilient during this difficult time and allow our young adults to meet this challenge with the grace and professionalism that WestMEC embodies.

As a parent, taxpayer and someone who attended technical school right out of high school programs like WestMEC are near and dear to me and I will support programs such as these and the vital role they play.

Again, I would implore the Governing Board, do what is in the best interest of the students who have decided to take on these courses of study, and many like my son, who is doing virtual learning through his home school, to online classes through his home school district as well as his West-MEC course. This is the sacrifice he is willing to make for the rest of the year to be able to attend his courses on the West-MEC campus.

We look forward to all of you seeing that WestMEC is truly unique...and with the unique situation happening today, WestMEC, can like it’s counterpart EVIT, for in-person instruction on August 17, and do it safely with accountability of the students, parents and staff.

Thank you for the time to listen to parents and the concerns of our students. We look forward to hearing your decision.

Respectfully,
Nathan Nixon

I believe many parents agree that with regard to safety precautions, WestMEC is a unique situation in the educational setting in several respects.

The classes are small and therefore more easily able to allow for distance restrictions and also able to assign entrances and exits for specific classes.

There is no food service or "passing periods" so students need not be exposed to people not in their own classes.

Your students are High School Juniors or older and of a maturity level to be held responsible for their own behavior and accountability (mask wearing and distancing).

Just trying to plan, but wanted to know with the benchmarks that came out by ADHS, will West-Mec be opening for in person instruction in August 17 as planned? I’m assuming with some of the forms we have received recently to sign the answer is yes, but wanted to know if there will be an announcement from the superintendent soon or not.
Is there anyone answering the phones at West Mec? I call and just get voice mail and no call back or I get a busy signal.
If you or anybody you know is looking for a new addition to your family or even a temporary foster situation please let me know ! Due to the closures of schools across Arizona we are faced with the tough decision of either getting them out and to a family or having them go back to the shelter which would be absolutely heartbreaking.
Will HS registrations for next year at the Northeast Campus still be held on Saturday Morning 3/28 or will those be re-scheduled? I have sent emails and called and I cannot get a straight answer as to whether they will still be held or postponed?
Great article.
Is there any way we can get this profession some exposure at West-MEC?
We at the United Surveyors of Arizona are interested in getting skilled personnel into the workforce.

Last week some of our Dental Science students took on a large volunteer project at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Students spent two days assisting with emergency dental care for under-insured and homeless individuals. Over 2000 kids and adults received care at this great event, and our West-MEC students had the opportunity to provide hands-on skills while working with dentists and lab technicians in the field.
