Today, Superintendent/President Dr. Ryan Cornner welcomed the GCC community for a first look at the Inclusion Center, located on the second floor of Camino Real. Students who helped plan and design the space were invited to see their vision become a reality.
What began as an idea brought forward by GCC’s Black Student Union, a dedicated space where students could gather, connect, and grow, evolved into the Inclusion Center. This innovative space, the first of its kind, will serve multiple identity groups and features a shared community area and study rooms.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for a later date, and we hope to see you there!

After taking a short break from posting, we’re closing out Nurses Week by celebrating the dedication, compassion, and resilience of nurses everywhere, including our incredible GCC nursing alumna, Giselle Herrera, Class of 2024.
Inspired by her desire to “make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” Giselle chose GCC for its supportive environment and strong hands-on clinical experience. Today, she serves as both an RN Clinical Supervisor and Lead RN Case Manager, making an impact on patients and healthcare teams every day.
Reflecting on her journey, Giselle shared, “Now, being a nurse means being an advocate, a leader, an educator, and a source of support for patients and their families during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.”
She also reminds current nursing students to “stay patient with yourself and trust the process. Nursing school can be challenging and overwhelming at times, but every experience is helping you grow into a stronger and more capable nurse.”
Thank you, Giselle, for representing GCC with compassion, leadership, and excellence. Happy Nurses Week to all nurses who continue to care, support, and inspire every day.

Meet Kai Smith, a current nursing student graduating in Spring 2026 🩺
Kai’s journey into nursing started with a simple but powerful goal: to be a resource for the community and help others through some of life’s most critical moments. What began as a career shift quickly turned into a passion fueled by a love for patient care, a supportive learning environment at GCC, and a drive to make a real difference.
From long lecture days and 12-hour clinical rotations to mastering the art of “nursing critical thinking,” Kai has embraced every challenge along the way. Whether in the fast-paced emergency department or helping patients heal in wound care, Kai has found purpose in both the urgency and the quiet, hands-on moments of care.
“Nursing school has been the most difficult thing I have ever done academically and possibly in my life. However, it is not a race, it is a marathon you take everything one day, assignment, clinical, and exam at a time.”
Now in the final stretch, Kai reflects on the journey—from feeling overwhelmed to confidently stepping into the role of a nurse, actively contributing to patient care and supporting a team.
Kai’s advice to future nurses? Be ready to work, stay resilient, and lean on your community because no one gets through nursing school alone.
As we celebrate Nurse Week, we’re proud to spotlight Kai, one of many compassionate and dedicated students making a difference in the GCC Nursing program.
