It's time for another ! Today we recognize Jim Hughens, music teacher at Legacy Traditional School - West Surprise. We asked about his role and what he loves most about being able to help Legacy families!
"I have been teaching music in Arizona for the past 26 years. I have been teaching at Legacy schools for the last six years; four years at Legacy Traditional School - Glendale and two at LTS - West Surprise. I teach grades 3 through 8 instrumental music (recorder, band, guitar and piano)."
When asked what he loves most about helping students through music, Hughens said, "I love when students get to perform the pieces they have worked so hard on for their families. That is the moment when all the work becomes worthwhile to them.
Another thing I enjoy most about teaching is when past students contact me to let me know how music has impacted their success in whatever path life has led them to. Those are the moments that you can really feel the importance of what we do."
One of his favorite memories as a music teacher comes from his time at LTS - Glendale. "A few years ago at Glendale we put together a very special Veteran's Day program involving the entire school. It was an inspiring day that affected all of us deeply as a community," he commented.
Hughens also noted that he strives to instill in his students the drive to do their best. "I always try to encourage my students to do their best and strive to make their best even better with each passing day. Studying music is a lifelong pursuit, so there is always more to discover and practice."
Thank you, Mr. Hughens, for being an inspiration to our Legacy students!
