The Power of Compliments | The Science of Love 01/24/2019

Join AsuWest Psi Chi in National Compliments Day! Make compliments meaningful, loving, and genuine. Compliments may seem like a simple thing that has no impact on our lives, however, compliments are a powerful tool for our self-esteem, relationships, and mental health. Just as our bodies need a massage after all the constant hard work and use it is put through, our mind, heart, and ego need a message for all the stress and challenges they go through. So please join Psi Chi today in making compliments matter the most. Think about those around you, whether they are strangers, friends, or family and think about what you truly appreciate about that person. Does a stranger's vibrant smile make you smile? Tell them how beautiful their smile is. Is your friend an incredible listener that makes you feel heard, validated, and important? Tell them how amazing they are as a friend and as a person for their empathetic qualities and how much it means to you. Does your family member unconditionally love you or make you laugh? Tell them how much you love their ability to bring happiness, laughter, joy, and love to your life.

We sometimes have a tendency to shut compliments down because of our own insecurities. So try to practice just saying "Thank you" when you are complimented, and reflecting on how the compliment made you feel, and how it is important in your relationship with the person that gave you the compliment.

I challenge you to compliment 10 people today, any method. Email, social media, phone call, text message, in person, handwritten letter or notes, through song or sign language.

You are Amazing, inside and out and no matter how small or large, I appreciate having your bright spirit in my life!

The Power of Compliments | The Science of Love A lot of us have trouble accepting compliments. We're worried that it will make us seem self-absorbed, or we just don't believe that what the person is sayin...

Get hooked on nature: Ben Klasky at TEDxRainier 11/17/2018

It's National Take a Hike Day! One of the best tools we have to reduce symptoms for a range of mental health ailments such as Depression, ADHD, ADD, Anxiety, and others is Nature (Pearson & Craig, 2014). It's not simply enough to view nature, you must be immersed within nature. Feel the grass under your feet, your hands in the crisp cool rivers, smell the trees, hear the birds, and feel the warmth of the sun on your face. When you are outside your body creates one of the most important vitamins your body needs to maintain optimal health, Vitamin D. Some of the important roles of Vitamin D in your body is:
Maintaining health of bones & teeth, your brain, nervous system, immune system, insulin levels, diabetes management, lung function, cardiovascular health, influencing the expression of genes involved in cancer development and more (Ware, 2017).

So in honor of mental health and National Take a Hike Day, I challenge you to take a moment today to hike through nature or simply talk a walk outside and enjoy the natural world around you. Please share your beautiful hike with us here on this post by sharing a picture of your hike!
