Check rides can sound scary, but they shouldn’t be.

As CFIs, it’s our job to make sure you’re prepared and confident before we ever send you to a check ride. By the time test day arrives, you’ve already put in the work and proven you’re ready.

Trust your training and go show what you know. ✈️

Brooke recently joined us for a Discovery Flight and got a firsthand look at what it’s actually like to fly an airplane.

Like many people, she came in curious about aviation but wasn’t sure what to expect. A few minutes after takeoff, she was flying the airplane herself and seeing Arizona from a perspective few people ever get to experience.

It’s amazing how quickly something that seems impossible can start to feel achievable.

Thank you, Brooke, for trusting us with your first flight experience. We loved having you out at Deep Sky Flight Training!

Every pilot must have these 3 documents when acting as PIC:

• Pilot Certificate
• Medical Certificate
• Government-Issued Photo ID

You can find this requirement in FAR 61.3(a).

A quick document check before every flight can save you a lot of trouble later.

Some people spend their day staring at spreadsheets.

Some people spend their day staring at this. ✈️☀️

Not saying one is better than the other… but one comes with sunsets at 5,500 feet and a view that never gets old.

Be honest: would you trade your office for a cockpit?

5 things every student pilot should know that many CFIs don’t tell you:

1. You WILL plateau. Progress isn’t always linear, and that’s completely normal.
2. Ask more questions. The students who learn the fastest are usually the ones asking the most.
3. Bad habits are easy to start and hard to break. Focus on building good habits from day one.
4. Don’t wait for your instructor to critique every flight. Learn to evaluate your own performance and identify areas for improvement.
5. Not every instructor is the right fit. If the learning relationship isn’t working, it’s okay to switch instructors.

Flight training isn’t about being perfect—it’s about continuous improvement. Which one do you wish someone had told you sooner? Comment below.

From passenger to pilot ✈️

Today, Brooke took the controls for the very first time during her Discovery Flight at Deep Sky Flight Training. From takeoff to incredible Arizona views, she got a firsthand look at what it’s really like to fly an airplane.

The best part? You don’t need any experience to get started.

✈️ The minimum fuel reserve required for a daytime VFR flight is enough fuel to fly to your intended destination plus 30 minutes at normal cruising speed.

While that’s the legal minimum, smart pilots usually plan for much more. Extra fuel gives you options if you encounter unexpected weather, delays, or changes to your flight plan.

How much extra fuel do you like to have in the tanks before takeoff? 👇

Thunderstorms aren’t just rain clouds — they’re one of the biggest weather hazards pilots face. Here are the 3 stages every aviation student should know👇

⛈️ 1. CUMULUS STAGE
Warm air rises and builds towering clouds. Mostly updrafts here, but turbulence is already starting to develop. This is the “building” stage of the storm.

🌧️ 2. MATURE STAGE
The most dangerous stage. Heavy rain, lightning, hail, strong winds, severe turbulence, and possible microbursts. Both updrafts and downdrafts are present. Avoid at all costs as a pilot.

🌤️ 3. DISSIPATING STAGE
The storm starts to weaken as downdrafts take over and cut off the warm rising air. Rain decreases, but turbulence and wind shear can still be a factor.

Understanding thunderstorms is critical for safe decision making in aviation. Respect the weather and always give storms plenty of space ✈️
