“'This is a super cool program because kids are teaching other kids. The middle school kids have formed really strong bonds with their 3rd graders. It’s great to watch how excited the Readers are to see their Leaders and vice versa,' she explains. 'The way the Leaders have taken over and guided the 3rd graders is so amazing to see. Now the 3rd graders are sounding out words and reading quicker and more efficiently. I’m proud of how far they all have come.'”

Program Coach Carissa is working with Kaydence at Foothills Elementary School in the Peoria Unified School District this semester. Because of her experiences as a Program Coach, Carissa recently switched her major from secondary education to elementary education.
“I changed my major because interacting with the third graders made me realize that I connect very well with younger children and that I enjoy being around them. I’ve also found that the kids love being around me and like to talk to me every chance they get. I don’t always have the highest view of myself and knowing that these kids want me in their lives makes me feel valued and important."

Then, the students got to get hands-on with the many electives available to them next year. What is currently trending in Peoria Unified? Giving thanks! This time of year, it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle at the start of the holiday season and lose sight of why this time with family is so important. Today I am joined by our Superintendent, his cabinet, and district staff to learn about how they celebrate this time of year and what they are most thankful for. From the entire Peoria Unified family to yours, we wish you a happy thanksgiving!
