Their elusive nature poetically opens the possibility of other realities, of other existences, or of different ways of being that are not reliant on colonial contact. This installation draws from archival television news footage, interviews with prominent zoologists, and historical ephemera in an exhibition that gestures to contemporary discourses around visibility and the tensions embedded in surveillance cultures. Just Announced: Jean Chaudhuri: "What's Life All About?" opens November 10 in ArtSpace West (runs through November 23, Mondays-Thursdays from 12n-5pm).

This exhibition’s title comes from a poem by the author and community leader Jean Chaudhuri, whose work and life are showcased in this installation and highlight a central part of her life: what it means to give back to your community from an indigenous perspective. A member of the Muscogee-Creek tribe, Chaudhuri established the Traditional Indian Alliance for Greater Tucson in 1972 and became the Executive Director for the Tucson Indian Center. An author, playwright, and poet, she wrote the comedic play "Indians Discover Christopher Columbus" for the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s landing on this continent. She wrote the book "A Sacred Path: The Way of the Muscogee Creek" with her husband, Joy Chaudhuri. In 1986, Chaudhuri co-chaired the Native American Heritage Preservation Coalition, formulated to prevent a land swap of the Phoenix Indian School with a private developer’s land in Florida; without Jean, the Phoenix Indian School would not be here today. The Labriola National American Indian Data Center shares this collection of Chaudhuri’s work so that others may know the significance and incredible amount of labor she gave to the Indigenous community here in Phoenix and Tucson. A special opening reception will take place on Wednesday, November 9, from 7:00-9:00 pm.

This is an exhibition and a story of discovery and rediscovery told through photography, composite imagery, text, sound, and video. It is a body of work that presents on a larger scale the overlooked, the extremely small, the barely glimpsed, and fragile elements of life, of nature: curious bits of perfection often missed as one runs from point to point, with many that may not continue to exist as weather extremes of global warming begin to take effect upon the planet in both subtle and violent manners.

Announcing a special event in connection with our current installation in ArtSpace West, "alejandro t. acierto: Withholding: a reading room for the Archive of Constraint."

"The sun never knew how great it was until it struck the side of a building"
A live community mapping workshop with artist Dan Paz
Monday, September 27 from 12noon-1:15pm (AZ time)

Guided by artist and researcher Dan Paz, participants will help develop a nationwide, centralized database of youth detention centers to draw attention to the social, political, and infrastructural impact that youth incarceration has in the US. In these live mapping workshops, Paz leads participants through labyrinthine bureaucracies of obscured and hidden information to unpack the systems that allow for the corporatization of punishment. Participants are invited to any or all these workshops and may drop in and out as their schedules allow.
