A message from the GCC Performing Arts Department about classes the week of March 22, 2021

06/08/2020

maricopa.webex.com

Dear Students,

We write to you today a message from all Performing Arts faculty. A strong message of support to those speaking out against racial injustices in our country.

We believe that black lives matter. Your voices are being heard and are welcome here in our department.

We acknowledge that many of you face such discrimination and injustices in your lives every day. A truth to which most of us faculty cannot fully relate but we offer our sincerest empathy and compassion. Our hearts and our actions will consistently be grounded in this reality.

We believe all of you deserve the best education possible. You will influence the next generation to become admirable stewards of our culture, beliefs, values and democracy. Do not take that responsibility lightly.

Now we ask of you, how can we change? How can we better impact your lives or the lives of others? What can we do to improve the culture of the Performing Arts Department? Your thoughts and opinions will only strengthen our department.

As a united community of performers and artists here at GCC, we all have an opportunity to express our values in meaningful ways. How can we accomplish this heavy task?

We, the faculty, are committed to making meaningful change happen by regularly addressing issues of diversity and discrimination at faculty meetings, through curriculum, student retention and recruitment.

You have a voice, we stand by you.

Sincerely,

GCC Performing Arts Faculty
