Desert Heights Charter School (Official)

Desert Heights Charter School (Official) Desert Heights Charter School I would like to take a moment to introduce our school to you. Best Regards,
Katie Fjell
Principal/ Desert Heights Charter School

My name is Katie Miller, I am the Principal at Desert Heights Charter School located in Glendale, Arizona. Desert Heights is a small K-4 Charter elementary school which also has a Preschool program serving ages 2 thru 5. DH is one that believes strongly in working collaboratively with parents to promote a positive educational experience for each and every child. Consequently, Desert Heights has be

come known in the educational community as a school that “feels like family”. One of our many assets as a small charter school is our ability to create an environment that is safe, community oriented, and family friendly. We are always hosting special events to acknowledge our families and we highly encourage parent participation in a variety of ways from encouraging parents to volunteer in whatever capacity possible. Below you will find a few of the activities that are sponsored throughout the year as a small way of fostering a sense of community for our families:

1.Pastries for Parents
2.Students Supporting Brain Research Walk/Run
3.Kindergarten Tea for Mother’s Day
4.Goodies for Grandparents
5.Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
6.Annual Fall Festival
7.Community Movie Nights
8.Family Field Day
9.Read Across America
10.Red Ribbon Week
11.Musical Performances
12.Ice Cream Socials/Art Show
13.Monthly Flag Raising Ceremonies
14.Quarterly Award Ceremonies

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. We truly believe that once you visit our campus and get to know our faculty, we think you will agree that we hire the best. I highly encourage you to come by and visit with me, or observe our teachers and students in action. We will be hosting a series of discussion groups with parents, seeking their input in identifying ways we might fine tune our school. If you would like to participate, or if you just want to learn more about our comprehensive educational philosophy that emphasizes quality instruction by Highly Qualified Teachers, a safe, orderly learning environment and a very challenging curriculum, please call me at (602) 896-2900,option 2.

Legacy Spotlight: Josh Moreno

For Josh Moreno, choosing Desert Heights for his three children meant returning to a place that helped shape who he is today.

Josh attended Desert Heights from 3rd through 8th grade, back when our Charter campus served students through middle school. His memories include traditions some longtime Coyotes may recognize turning Mr. Jiles into an ice cream sundae, PE with Coach Blackburn, and spending time around the “fishbowl.” 🐺

But what stayed with him most was the impact of his teachers.

"The teachers were all very determined to see us succeed... Desert Heights provided me more than just an education; it laid a foundation of life lessons and started my professional journey."

Years later, Josh chose Desert Heights for his own children, Zane, Luke, and Malia, hoping they would experience that same combination of high expectations, personal support, and a community invested in their success.

Today, he gets to watch them create their own Desert Heights memories from friendships and recess to projects they're excited to come home and talk about.

When asked to describe Desert Heights in three words, Josh chose: Embracing. Conscientious. Principled.

From one generation of Coyotes to the next, we're grateful to have the Moreno family continuing their story with Desert Heights. ❤️🐺

We had a special guest join 5th Grade PE today!
Mr. Jiles stopped by and couldn’t resist jumping into a game of badminton with our Coyotes! Safe to say, PE is a little more fun when the President of the school joins your team. 😂🐺

The Chasquis are on the move!

Our 4th graders brought their Social Studies learning to life with a Chasquis Race around the Fishbowl! Students stepped into the role of Inca messengers, racing to deliver information just as Chasquis did throughout the Inca Empire.

A fun way to wrap up their unit and put what they’ve been learning into action! 🐺📚

Nothing like a “worst meal” to make for some entertaining writing! 😂🍽️

Our 5th graders in Mrs. Moreno’s class shared their “Worst Meal” paragraphs, using sensory details to help their classmates picture, smell, taste and feel just how terrible these meals really were! ✍️📚

A big thank you to our Desert Heights Charter families for your patience, flexibility, and understanding this morning as we navigated the unexpected power outage.

We know an unexpected early dismissal can quickly change the course of your day, and we truly appreciate how quickly our families worked with us to get our students home safely.

Thank you to our families, students, and staff for working together and making the best of an unexpected morning. We appreciate our Coyote community!
