Week 1: The Scope of the Cancer Problem in the Fire Service

The first week of the Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month addresses why cancer is the number-one line-of-duty death in the fire service. Additionally, the content defines cancer, explains the scope of occupational cancer in the fire service and identifies carcinogens, occupational exposures and other chemicals found in products of combustion (e.g. smoke, etc.).

To get the most from this week, we recommend taking one day this week to conduct a Safety Stand Down. All resources are also available to review at your convenience at www.fcsn.net.

Chief Muniz served as the GCC Fire Science Program Director for 15 years.
Prior to serving Glendale Community College he served as the Fire Chief in Portales, New Mexico, and as an FDNY Firefighter for over twenty years; retiring as a Truck Co. Lieutenant. As another significant accomplishment, Chief Muniz holds a Juris Doctorate Degree and is a practicing Attorney in immigration, Criminal, and Native American law.

A: I Love the opportunity to teach the next generation of firefighters. Teaching also allows me to stay in tune with my skills. Like my primary job, when you love what you do it really doesn't feel like work!

Q: Why have you chosen to teach at GCC Fire Academy?
A: I have been a part of this program since I attended back in 1999. The College at times has been like my home away from home. I just can't see myself teaching anywhere else!
