It is with great sadness, we share the passing of Mary Sindel. Mary began working for GCC in 1986 and retired in 2014 after working at GCC for over 28 years. During the majority of that time, she was the head department secretary for the Math and Computer Science Department. She also did short stints as the assistant to several different deans and the GCC president. Mary was very active in the Professional Staff Association (PSA) and served as the president of that organization for a period of time. She received many awards and certificates of appreciation for her work on the GCC campus.

Mary was known at GCC for her superior problem-solving skills and strong work ethic. Glendale Community College was a significant part of Mary’s life. Her mother worked there before Mary, all four of her daughters attended GCC and worked there after high school, and one of her daughters is a faculty member.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 5250 W. Thunderbird Rd. Glendale, AZ 85306.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the GCC Pullins Baseball Scholarship. This scholarship was very dear to Mary’s heart.

It is with great sadness, we inform you of the passing of our dear friend and long-time colleague, Joe Mercer. Joe passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 5, 2021. Joe had been with Glendale Community College Veteran Services since 2001 and retired in January 2021. Joe was a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1969-1993.

Joe served his country, our Veterans, and the GCC community with genuine care and concern for others. His friendly cheerful disposition and infectious smile will stay with us always. Joe’s legacy includes countless hours advising, mentoring, and volunteering, championing Veteran scholarships, opportunities, and initiatives for the betterment of students.

“Joseph Mercer was born on September 12, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mercer enlisted in the Air Force with a friend in May of 1969, and he stayed in the Air Force until he retired in June 1993. He was later awarded the Meritorious Service medal twice and the Air Force Commendation medal. While in the service, he served as an aircraft systems instructor and earned the Master Instructor rating.” - Veterans Heritage Project, Book XIII, Edition 6, 2017.
