It's almost time for a new year at Stepping Stones Preschool! We can't wait to get the science fun rolling again. We talk about discovery, make predictions, learn about cause and effect and most of all we have fun doing it! At SSP children question, explore, and make hypotheses. It's what's special about play based learning! Come and see!

We create all kinds of pictures and designs at Stepping Stones Preschool AZ . Art is an every day part of the fun. Why do art? It builds self confidence, is an outlet for emotion and is calming for kids. As children grasp crayons, handle glue sticks and cut shapes, they are working on fine motor skills. As children create their pictures they are developing critical thinking skills. Despite the mess that can happen, art is developing life long skills! Let art flow and know its not just messy, but important work. Come visit us for a tour and let's talk about the important work that happens through play.

Guess what happened last week! The Foothills Christian Church parking lot, which is where we are located, now has a brand new look! There are also about 40 new spaces added in the labrinth area. Our offices are open next week from 9:30 to 12:30 and preschool starts again in early August. Can't wait to greet all our returning and new friends! We still have room for your little one too!

Ahh! Those hot days of summer! Your floors are full of toys, laundry needs folding, pool towels drying. Let's add some math into the fun! First toys--every time kids clean up they are sorting and classifying. That's an important math skill! Laundry to sort, and you could add counting and matching socks! (2 great math skills) What's a different way to sort those? Match by color or size?How many folds does a pool towel need? If kids count the folds or you count as you fold it that gives children exposure to numbers and sequencing. Offer 1 treat or two...and ask those all important math questions-- How did you know 2 is more? What is one more? Math is everywhere! We do it every day and you are your child's first teacher. As a teacher, you are outstanding! Time for a board game?

What does a top notch 5 star school do when it's closed for summer break? It makes improvements that create an even better school! New artificial turf installed on playground and in other areas, floor cleaning and deep cleaning is finished and up next...new outside cameras and upgrades to outdoor security. Cooking with children transforms the kitchen into a math class, a science lab or a language workshop. It builds math skills as children measure or count 10 stirrings of a special recipe. Science is a hands on experience when cooking as solids turn to liquid, heat changes ingredients and measuring becomes real. Language happens as we introduce kids to new words like whisking, blending and measuring. Blueberries and strawberries become a pattern, are size variables and are different tastes and textures. It's chaos in the kitchen, but fun learning.

Hope your summer is going well! It's busy, but you can slow down (and beat the heat) with a good book. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a short book about letters in a coconut tree. Maybe buy a real coconut, go pretend bowling with it, taste coconut or make something with coconut. It's a great book to then use when on a letter hunt. By extending the learning you can help children grow too. Reading is one of the best ways to help your child be preschool ready. It helps them focus, slows them down, gives them new ideas and helps them gain language skills. It's an amazing gift we can give our children.
