Hope your summer is going well! It's busy, but you can slow down (and beat the heat) with a good book. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a short book about letters in a coconut tree. Maybe buy a real coconut, go pretend bowling with it, taste coconut or make something with coconut. It's a great book to then use when on a letter hunt. By extending the learning you can help children grow too. Reading is one of the best ways to help your child be preschool ready. It helps them focus, slows them down, gives them new ideas and helps them gain language skills. It's an amazing gift we can give our children. If you are able to give your child a school experience, consider Stepping Stones Preschool AZ . We read to children every day too!

Welcome to week 2 of our summer series. Children learn through everything they do AND children love to get messy. Two facts of life! Messy play or sensory play involves senses like touch, smell and even taste. This play builds language development as they describe what's happening (slimy, gritty, sparkley, slippery). It helps strengthen motor skills by pinching, kneading and pouring. Sensory materials have a calming effect, building emotional regulation. It's time for soapy water, shaving cream play, maybe fingerpaints if you are a brave parent! Kinetic sand is a little messy but fun. Even cheaper is cornstarch and water "goop". Recipe is 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water. Time to have fun and get messy!

Welcome to our weekly "play is learning" time! At Stepping Stones Preschool play builds the foundation of learning and is the center of every day. Summer is all about time to relax and play but how sad that we think play is most important for only a few months. Play should be a part of every day for children. Let's celebrate play this week with bubbles and washing dishes, playdoh to strengthen our little fingers, crushing a bouquet of cilantro to release the smells, or digging in some sand or dirt to explore new textures and smells. Enjoy the play!
Homemade playdough
2 c. Flour
2 c. Water with food colors added
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1/2 c. Salt
Mix, cook over medium heat until liquid becomes a doughy ball. Dump onto flour covered surface and knead a few times to get a better, smoother dough. Let it cool a bit and its ready for finger strengthening play.
