Heavy Lies the Helmet Accredited continuing education for emergency and critical care clinicians, including the premiere outdoor conference, Crash and Learn.

Grounded in the belief that education is the cornerstone of effective practice, Heavy Lies the Helmet’s mission is to equip critical care transport providers with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver exceptional patient care in any situation. Our name, inspired by Shakespeare’s Henry IV, reflects the weighty responsibility inherent in the provision of emergency and critical care services

in an autonomous environment. We embrace this responsibility by delivering high-quality content led by industry leaders with extensive experience in pre-hospital and inter-hospital settings. We also recognize that true education extends beyond the mere acquisition of facts; it fosters curiosity, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning. We aim to bridge this gap between theory and practice while shaping the future of critical care transport in new and innovative ways.

🚨 When Reperfusion Isn’t Enough

A 46-year-old male presents with an inferior STEMI and undergoes successful PCI. Initially stable, he develops unexplained tachycardia, respiratory distress, hypotension, and rapidly worsening end-organ function.

Despite a PA catheter showing a high-output state (CO 13.9 / CI 7.3), the patient was cold, clammy, acidotic, and clearly in shock. A conflicting ScvO₂ later suggested a low cardiac index.
