TOPIC: Demonstration of an evacuation procedure using the Appion Megaflow unit and TEZ vacuum pump. Jon Romenesko with Appion will demonstrate this procedure on a real residential air conditioning split-system. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to do a quick evacuation on a real system you should come to this meeting. Everyone, especially HVAC students, is welcome to attend (you don’t have to be an RSES member).

The new BAS (Building Automation Systems) Certificate is officially being offered starting this Fall term. What this actually means is that we are offering new courses designed only for this new certificate, starting with HVACR2233 BAS Object-oriented Programming 1, - this is the first of two programming courses. The problem is that it's being offered on Saturday mornings starting at 8am. I think this was a big mistake. I can tell because so far not one student has registered for this course. Of course, it's still very early. So what's this new programming course all about? Object-oriented programming is how all manufacturers of DDC (that's Direct Digital Controls) program their controllers. And they all use a programming protocol (fancy word for "rules") called BACnet (that's Building Automation Control network). So this first programming course studies this BACnet thing. And, if enough students realize that this area of the HVACR industry is a great career choice and actually register for this course, these students will start off by programming some of the controllers we have, made by Automated Logic. But getting back to the BACnet thing, my idea for this course, (I'm the one who created it) is to first learn about object-oriented programming and BACnet using a free software called "Alice". You can check Alice out now if you like, it's free to everyone. And the really cool thing is that it uses terms and ideas that are similar to BACnet (which is a protocol only used by we in the HVACR trade). Anyway, after playing around with Alice for a while my idea was to then start learning how to object-orient program using our Automated Logic controllers in the classroom TEC 1007. These controllers were donated by Automated Logic Corp (ALC) several years ago. But we'll also be getting other brands, like "Contemporary Controls", so students can learn programming on these as well. Anyway, if anyone sees this post think about a career in Building Automation, and think about taking this first programming course, even though it's on a Saturday morning.

The Rees Scholarship June 1 deadline is fast approaching!

Last year, instructors throughout the nation encouraged their students to submit applications for our October 1, 2016 deadline. Because of instructors’ efforts and dedication to developing the HVACR workforce, the Rees Foundation awarded more than $100,000 in 2016 to students pursuing an education in the field.

For this reason, I encourage you to share this scholarship opportunity with your HVACR students.

The Rees Foundation assesses scholarship applications based on the following components:

• Essay (included in the online application form)
• Recommendation Letters
• Grades in HVACR courses

Here's the Fall schedule of classes (you'll have to click on it to blow it up enough so you can see the details). We are already registering students for the fall term, so you don't want to wait. When a class fills up it's closed. By the way, our new BAS (Building Automation Systems) certificate is starting this Fall term, with many new courses specifically for this certificate.
