Chief George Bacorn, a 36-year veteran of the Denton (MD) Police Department who served six of those years as Chief, was killed in a collision when a delivery truck sideswiped another truck, then struck Chief Bacorn’s agency-owned vehicle head-on. He leaves behind his wife, five sons, a sister, thirteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Trooper Hayden Phillips, a three-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police, was fatally shot during a traffic stop. The driver, who was on probation and had a warrant out for his arrest, fled the scene. He was caught several hours later and charged with the murder of a first responder. Trooper Hayden leaves behind his wife and three sons.

Officer Brian Liles, a 16-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol, was killed in a motorcycle accident. In 2024, Officer Liles was named Officer of the Year. He leaves behind his wife, two children, two sisters, and his parents.

Trooper Brad Ritger, a five-year veteran of the Wisconsin State Patrol who previously served with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, succumbed to injuries he sustained in September when he fell from a highway overpass as he moved for cover after deploying spike strips.

Deputy Michael Hendricks, who served with the Charleston County (SC) Sheriff’s Office for more than three years, was killed in a multi-vehicle crash. According to reports, Deputy Hendricks was driving a Sheriff’s Office pickup truck that collided with a tractor-trailer and burst into flames. He leaves behind his wife, three sons, two stepchildren, mother, father, brother, and grandmother.

𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 on my 45-year career in law enforcement, I reflect on the day our world changed forever. I witnessed firsthand how quickly life changed - and how fast initial outrage can fade into collective forgetting.

𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, as a new generation grows up with no living memory of that dark day, the lessons of history are more critical than ever. Being proud of our country doesn’t mean ignoring our imperfections; it means standing together to protect what makes it great.

Officer Christopher DeLong, a two-year veteran of the Columbia (SC) Police Department, was fatally shot while handling a domestic disturbance call. He initially responded to a report of property damage resulting from a domestic dispute. After leaving that scene, he saw a suspect and vehicle matching the description of those involved and called it in. Back-up officers arrived shortly after and found Officer DeLong had been fatally shot. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

Wildlife Officer David Taylor, a U.S. Navy veteran who served with the U.S. Department of the Interior - Fish and Wildlife Service - Division of Refuge Law Enforcement at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma, was killed while evacuating residents who were in the path of a fast-moving wildfire. He was last seen assisting a family as they left their home. Officer Taylor’s body was recovered from a structure days later. He leaves behind his wife, son and parents.

Sgt. Chris Fisher, a three-month veteran of the Warm Springs (GA) Police Department who had previously served with the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and Heard County Sheriff’s Office, was fatally shot in an ambush. While sitting in his patrol unit, a man pulled up next to him and fired. It is believed the gunman, who was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a subsequent traffic stop, had been arrested by Sgt. Fisher earlier. The Sergeant leaves behind his wife and two children.
