For many of them, it was the first art class they'd ever taken.
Each year in Professor Richard Harris's Western Culture II course, Webb students put down the drafting tools and pick up a brush, recreating a painting stroke by stroke. Most arrive with no formal training. What they bring instead is precision: the patience to work a problem until it resolves, the discipline to get a detail exactly right.

Applied to a canvas, that instinct does something remarkable.
The Class of 2027 took this on as underclassmen, and by some accounts turned out some of the strongest work the course has seen.

Boxes, books, and brand-new beginnings. The Class of 2030 moved on campus this morning, and O-Week is officially underway!

Earlier this year, we announced the W. Selkirk Owen Award for Joe Signorelli '54 at Homecoming in May. Last week, a group of Webbies had the joy of presenting it to Joe in person, and the even greater joy of listening to him.

Joe was among the first classes to study at Webb's Glen Cove campus, and he brought the 1950s right into the room with him. Stories of working under Admiral Hyman Rickover. Attending sea trials for the Navy's earliest nuclear submarines. A chance meeting with a young Navy officer named Jimmy Carter.

But the story that stayed with us was how Joe kept in touch with his Webb roommate for seventy years. He showed us that four years on a small campus on Long Island Sound, and you leave with a career… and with people who stay in your life for the next seven decades.

Joe was joined by his daughter, Tara and by fellow alumni Dave Bovet, Vicky Dlugokecki, Jen Kollmer, and Ian Mutnick. Thank you, Joe, for a career of service to the maritime community and to Webb!

We’re excited to welcome Rocking the Boat to campus!

Students put their creativity and engineering skills to the test by building miniature barges using a limited supply of materials.

Then came the fun part: testing their designs in Webb’s Robinson Model Basin to see which barge could carry the most cargo (bouncy balls) while also crossing the finish line fastest, all while being pulled by an RC boat.

A fun challenge that puts creativity, design, and engineering to the test!

45 years at Webb. When Gailmarie started at Webb, our current students hadn't been born yet. She has watched classes arrive as nervous eighteen-year-olds and come back as chief engineers, naval architects, professors, CEOs, and more.

There’s the org chart, and then there's Gailmarie. When something happens here, good or bad, she's the first person anyone goes to. Not because there's a protocol. Because it would feel wrong not to.

She knows every event on the calendar, usually before it exists. She knows every Webbie's name, their class year, and some interesting facts about them.

For 45 years, Gailmarie made sure someone was holding the whole thing together underneath. The events run. The doors open. The people get taken care of.

Gailmarie, from everyone on campus, and from all of the Webbies out there, “Thank you”! Thank you for keeping Webb safe, keeping Webb happy, and keeping Webb going (for 45 years!).

After two weeks of designing, building, testing, and learning, our SEA students put their skills to the test during the final SEA Boat Race on Long Island Sound!

Students raced their hand-built boats and tackled an on-the-water obstacle course featuring the hand-powered pumps they designed and built earlier in the program.

It was an exciting finish to two weeks that also included visits to the FDNY Fire Rescue Vessel and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Our Summer Engineering Academy students had an unforgettable day yesterday, exploring engineering and maritime operations beyond the classroom.

Students walked across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, taking in one of New York City's greatest engineering achievements, before touring an FDNY rescue vessel to learn how engineering, technology, and teamwork come together on the water to support emergency response.

Now, onto the big race! After two weeks of designing, building, and refining their own boats, our students are ready to put their hard work to the test as they compete out on the Long Island Sound.

Session 2 is underway at Webb Institute's Summer Engineering Academy, and our students are already putting engineering principles into practice.

This week, students designed, built, and tested their own hand diaphragm pumps, exploring how pressure, valves, displacement, and fluid mechanics work together to move water efficiently. Through each iteration, they refined their designs, solved problems, and experienced the engineering process firsthand.

These pumps won't stay in the classroom for long. They'll soon become part of the boats students are building for their final challenge out on the Long Island Sound.

What a way to wrap up Session 1 of Webb Institute's Summer Engineering Academy!

After two weeks of hands-on learning, teamwork, and problem-solving, our students put their engineering skills to the test during Friday's SEA Boat Race. Students designed and built their own boats before launching them into the Long Island Sound, then completed an on-the-water obstacle course where they used custom-built hand-powered pumps to extinguish a simulated fire.

Congratulations to all of our Session 1 participants on an outstanding two weeks of innovation and engineering!
